33's. 4.88 or 5.29 gears?

i'm going to 33's soon, very soon.

which gears? i'm tired of my truck being so slow around town with the 4.10's. are 5.29's TOO agressive for 33's? opinions? experiences?

33's and 4.88's go togeather like lamb and tunafish-(coxy delivery guy )
Seriously I have 33's on 4.88s and it works great if you go to 5.29 you will be reving pretty high at lower speeds. If you go to 35's then 5.29's. Ive never heard of any one running 5.29's on 33's. The debate is usually 5.29 or 4.88 on 35's not 33's!
BTW, do a search.

32? hmmmm

31 is 4.56

33 is 4.88

I would honestly do 4.88 is you want some extra grunt. Just get 33's next time.

5.29s and 33s aren't a bad choice if you do a lot of towing or like to bomb up hills. don't expect to cruise at 80 though(my truck's never even hit 80)

33's and 4.88's game over, no more debate.......holy crap I think people just want to hear themselves talk and have a different opinion even if they know its a bad idea.
When it comes to giving advice ive learned to be blunt and honest. Giving these people lots of options just ensures they will do the wrong one.

Sorry, its monday, early, 85 degrees, and I have to go to work in a min. So im about to go postal.

...unless they have a 3.4, then i'd run 4.56s with 33s and 4.88s with 35s. there is NO clear cut rule when it comes to gears.

I've run both 5.29s and 4.88s on my 4Runner w/ 33s. With the tired, basicaly stock engine, 5.29s were nice, a little extra pep but the RPMs were pretty high, about 3500 @ 75. I did get better mileage, though. With 4.88s and some engine tweaking, it actually drives easier, RPMs are more tolerable on long trips, although MPG is about 10% less than with the 5.29s.

And, w/ 4.88s, your odo/speedo will be just about correct, w/ 5.29s, you read about 10-15% fast.

Well, you have now. I'm running 5.29s with 33s and that put me back to stock. Mine came with 4.88s from the factory.

For about 6 months I was running 5.29s with 32s (waiting for them to wear out so I could get 33s), I didn't see too much difference on the highway, but I could definetly tell the difference at idle...it wanted to pull harder.

Are you sure that you had 4.88 from the factory? The lowest I have ever heard or seen was 4.56.

Despite everyone telling me not to, I run 5.29's with 33's, an auto and a 3.4 in a 95 Runner.

I can go 90 on the highway.

I do get 20 mpg on the interstate.

I have not blown up the truck.

My advice, run 5.29's if you will have 33's or more. If you are asking here, then I am going to be you will not be blowing them up so there is no need for 4.88's for strength.

Again, my opinion is based only on real world testing that I have done.

The automatic trucks/4Runners that came w/ the factory 31" tire option had 4.88s stock.

No, not 3rd gen 4runners or tacos, unfortunately. Besides that, the factory 4.88s are different so the third member won't accept any aftermarket gears.
