Well, after pulling the gas tank tank again. I think I finally solved the problem of the gauge not registering below half-quarter of a tank, even when the tank was empty. I pulled the sending unit again and hooked it up while outside the tank. I put the float thru full ROM and found out that the sending unit was not properly grounded. I ran a ground wire to the sending unit, and the gauge now reads empty. After looking at the sending unit, it looks to be grounded internally. So something was not working properly. Anyway, I attached a ground wire to one of the mounting screws and to the body. We will see how it goes over the next week or so.

right after i fill up all the way, my gauge reads slightly less than full

when my gas light comes on i usually fill up all the way and can only put in like 12 gallons even though our tanks hold 18.5 gallons

btw, i have a 2000 4 runner sr5 sport edition

There is a TSB for fuel gauge/sender replacement which I know includes the '00 and may include the '99's. I'm not at home at the moment or I could provide the link. Use the forum's search engine. The dealership repaired mine out-of-warranty at no charge.

 

I didn't buy mine from the local dealer, do you think they would still fix it?

 

Mine stops working about after about 1/4 tank is used.....I dont even think about it. Just go by mileage and the low fuel light.

 

I believe most decent dealerships would, despite not buying it from them. That shouldn't matter since it's actually a design/component problem identified by Toyota. I wouldn't take no for an answer, assuming it's not something unrelated to the TSB. If the service rep gives you a hard time, go directly to the service manager. And if that person gives you a hard time, get them to give you the corporate phone number (can also be found in your owners manual). Hopefully, it won't need to escalate past the service rep.
