So I got the old one off, and trying to put the new one back in. One side says OUT, and the other says IN. I'm guessing the "IN" side goes on the side coming from the fuel tank???

 

Sounds like a good guess, that's how I put mine in.

ok well I tried starting the engine, and fuel started spraying out from the filter, I don't thought I had a straight connection butI guess I was wrong, how do you get a straight connectino?

 

Allright I must be retarded. Because I can't get the new filter to stop leaking on the "out" side. So finally I gave up and installed the old on, and that one fits fine!! Whaddya know????

Grrrrr......I'm gonna tackle this again next week. Any ideas?

 

Well, it doesn't sound like you crossthreaded anything, because the old filter fits fine. Either you have the wrong filter(wrong size threads on the outlet), or you just didn't have the outlet line tightened down enough.

 

I don't see any mention at all about the thin steel washers that go on BOTH sides of the union bolts. You did replace all those (4) on both ends of the filter right? A complete new set should have been in the box with the new filter.

My 96 does not have any washers. You probably need to torque it down a little more. Did you try that? How do the threads look?

 

yea I didn't get any washers either. I'm pretty sure I didn't cross-thread anything cuz I could hand thread it a good amount, well see the "IN" part was hard to hand tighten from the beginning, and the "OUT" part was really easy to thread up to a certain point.

I thought I torqued it down enough, I didn't want to break anything either so I didn't use complete uber force lol. Threads looked fine, and I checked the PO and it's the same thing. Grr.............

 

A little teflon tape on the threads might help.

 

Put some more muscle into it you wimp.

 

yea I don't think teflon tape would have stopped the amount I had leaking. But I will try that next time.

When you install the new filter you will be surprized as to the amount of torque you need to apply. When I changed mine it sprayed too, but I just kept on tightening down on it and everything worked out fine.

 

I'm curious, is the filter you are putting in different from the one coming out?

 

I'm replaced the old fuel filter with a new one. It isn't like a paper type filter, it's the whole part.

Haha funny Christian, fine, I'm just gonna have to charge you for that CO4RJ DVD. So 25/1.25 = 20 min. of tech time. AWESOME!!!

 

Doesn't the replacement look exactly the same as OEM? I was confused why you didn't know which was it was going in.

 

AZNSKY, I had the same problem you did on my 3.4. The "out" fitting would seat right on the filter so I put back the old one and it fit. The next day, I struggled with it again and same problem, but I finally got it to fit. You just gotta make sure the fitting goes in straight into the filter or you will have tons of fun trying to put the fitting on. I read on another thread that had Gadget saying that putting teflon tape on the threads was a bad idea. If the factory didn't have it on in the first place then I don't see why you would need to put it on now.

 

this probably isn't going to add much to this thread, but when i put a new fuel filter on my 2.7, the old one and new one had those little crush washers
