Lately ive been getting a very annoying noise outta the front end of my p/u. 4wd, v6. its comin from the passenger side. After a while, usually doesnt do it when its cold it will almost squeel(sp?) and it sounds like metal stressing. At the same time i was in the drivethrough and i turned the steering wheel and it'd squeak rather loudly. First any ideas? I was thinking possibly a bushing in either the suspension or in the steering. Its about 30 degrees around here lately and its just been starting, doesnt usually do it when its warmer? Also when i push down on the front end you can hear the squeaking? Could this be two seperate unrelated things or could the noise from me turning the wheel and the compression of the suspension be the same thing? Thanks for all the help!!!

 

they could be related.. at first look, i figured its the power steering pump not liking the cold.. then you said the suspension being compressed makes the noise also.. thats probably just some rubber bushing somewhere not liking the cold

 

I have the same kind of noise when I turn the wheel. Its the p st. belt just havent gotten around to fixing it. but the susp compressing noise is unrelated to that.

 

If the noise you are hearing sounds like a loud "groan" and occurs when you are making a tight turn or backing off of a curb with the wheels turned, you may be in need of these...

well, i replaced the belt, lot of deflection in it actually, could kick myself for lettin' it get that bad. Still have the noise though, really cant pinpoint it. Its coming from the front passenger side, when i wiggle the wheel back and forth goin straight it sounds like metal stressing, also when i back out of the driveway or make a turn. Was under the truck this morning and the tie rods seemed a lil loose, i could move em pretty easily. The boots where still intact, would tie rods even cause any noise? Im prolly gonna pick up some new sway bars bushings and endlinks, any other ideas? I appreciate all the help.

 

Maybe check and see if your calipers are frozen. The pads may have worn through to metal. I guess a quick check would be to raise the truck and see if the wheel spins.

 

Checking the bushings is a good idea too. Rack and swaybar would be the first to check.

 

wheel spins, just replaced pads actually last week, ill prolly just have to replace bushings and go piece by piece.

 

hmm, im not havin any luck here, but i do have an update. Im pretty sure its related to the steering, when i turn the wheel left or right while goin straight it sounds like a creaking noise, noise does not increase with revs, nor does its decrease when breaking, which made me rule out drivetrain? I dont know if im wrong there, but its definately while turning the wheel? I know this thread is gettin old quick, my apologies, but im really stumped? If im driving straight and throw it into neutral if ya move the wheel a few degrees you can hear it almost groaning and squealing? THe normal response here has been "its cold, turn up the radio" but be it steering or drivetrain i dont wanna take any chances and get stuck in a ditch in buffalo in the winter, it tends to get chilly. Also, the steering on the truck is tight, no play in it, so i dont know what else to check, everyone feel free to drop ideas, i need em.
