Front diff breather mod?
I did a search on this but didn't found what i was looking for.
I tried to do the extended breather mod to my front axle today.
Having done it before to my rear axle, i had ordered the same parts from the local Toyota dealer.
The problem is the union fitting because the top of the axle and the oil pan are so close together that the fuel hose i used for the mod would get squeezed against the oil pan.
The oil pan gets hot and vibrates when the engine is running so the hose would probably get broken by melting or rubbing. Has anyone done a write-up with pics and part numbers on this?
I think the front axle on my Hilux is the same one that is used on 2nd gen 4runners.

I remember someone running into the same issue. In his case, he used a 90 degree brass fitting found in the plumbing section of a home goods store.

Be careful since the front diff case is aluminum - easy to strip the threads. I used a brass fitting: long male end topped by a cube with one side tapped to accept another male end. Put another male end in the cube and attach your extended line (rubber fuel line works very well). Sorry I can't remember the hole & thread sizes.

1/8" NPT fittings usually work fine and are available in a wide variety of configurations:

is this different on the 4runners? On my '00 tacoma, there's a stock breather on the front differential that goes up into the engine bay... no need to extend it further really.

Because of how my diff was a 90 degree bend could not be screwed in more than 1/2 a thread so I got a brass fitting like 4Crawler suggested and cut it shorter to make it fit. It was a tight fit but it works.

I just put a breather on my 2nd Gen 1994 4Runner front and rear diffs. Interesting point about the oil pan getting too hot. Has anyone had problems with the rubber breaking down from the heat? I'll report back if I end up having any problems with mine. I used the Toyota part number 9040451319 for the union $5.51 ea. and Toy part number 9093003136 for the new breathers $2.62 ea. Both were shipped to me from Northridge Toyota. I cut, then flared, my front diff union to prevent it from slipping off. I also put the 5/16" fuel hose on the flared union before screwing it in. It took me a while to figure out to use the bend in the hose to push the union down onto the hole while keeping it squared. After I had it lined up I used the 12mm wrench to catch the threads. It still wasn't easy.
A new union next to one I cut and flared by giving it a few wacks on a tapered steel end.
The front diff breather looking from the passenger front side diagonally to the rear.
It's just four #2 philips screws and the 14mm hex nut to remove the plastic cup. I drilled on the right side of the gas cap for the breather but in retrospect I think it might be easier to go on the left side. The hose on the back side of the plastic made it a little tricky to get the door release and the plastic housing back in.
