Unhappy a few 22r problems.

Ive got a few stripped out exhaust stud holes in my cylinder head. I just did a head gasket and was lucky enough to be able to lift the head just enough to get the gasket out and the new one in. My plan is to helicoil them but they are the rear two and it looks like its gonna be tight getting a drill in there and having room to tap the hole. Any Ideas on what to do?

My fuel pump (mechanical) is making a very loud ticking. Almost as if the arm is not contacting the eccentric on the cam 100% of the time. Is this a sign of the pump dying? When I had the thing apart last the plastic spacer between the pump and the head broke so I bought another. This new one is a toyota part and is the same dementions as the old one so I do not think the new spacer is pulling the pump away from the cam.

thanks in advance for the help.

If you have access to an engine hoist or something similar, you could support the front end, then remove the motor mounts. Then lower the engine below normal. This should give you access. If you don't have access to a hoist, a floor jack under the oilpan and a ratchet strap on each side to stabilize will also work.

thanks for the reply. I actually broke down and just got a right angle attachment for my drill, I can deal with tapping a hole in a tight spot, its no biggie.

Anyone have any ideas on the fuel pump?

I don't have any ideas on your fuel pump but please let me know how your rethreading project goes, I am getting ready to do the same thing myself (back stud on a 22R).

When you helicoil the original hole's be sure to use studs in the hole's with nuts (DON'T USE BOLTS). lock tight helps to. If you have access to a air drill it worked out pretty good for me.

I've got an extra fuel pump (I think) if you want it.
PM me and I'll double check that it's the right one.

I was looking at mine again last night getting ready to remove the exhaust manifold. It looks like there might be room to get to that back hole if I use a right angle drill. If that metal coolant tube wasn't there it would be a slam dunk. Any luck with yours yet? Also was wondering what drill size and helicoil size to use?

i really probably should have helicoiled my head when i redid my exhaust last summer. would have been much easier than tapping the holes to M12(they were all SHOT) and redrilling the manifold :pat: i kind of think they were crooked anyway

oh well, all will be good again when i put in a 22RE this summer!
