Factory Locker revisited
I think this may be one mod I am going to have to do. I regret the fact my truck lacks this option. I check with my parts dept. and he says it doesnt appear there is an option for 4.10 gears in 98' with a locker. I understood this to be my current gear ratio from a chart I no longer have access to. Anyone know of a factory locker combined with 4.10 gears from the factory?

If your Tacoma didn't come from the factory with a locker, you have the 8.4" diff. The electric locker will NOT fit into this housing, so your options for a selectable locker are:
1.) ARB air locker
2.) Complete V6/turbo 8" rear axle (housing & 3rd member) from a e-locked Tacoma. I would say 4Runner also, but the suspension is different.
My vote is for the ARB since that will probably be cheaper, not to mention less labor intensive.

If your current axle is the 8.4 rather than the 8.0 inch ring gear than you may want to swap axles from a junkyard truck such as this. Car-part.com comes through again.

What do you think? My plan is to find a e-locker used, and do most the work myself. Looks like fun.
FYI a new e-locker at MY COST (unknown gear ratio, randomly chosen) was 746.00, where I work.

Phong is right...you can't just add the Yota locker to an unlocked diff. The TRD models (the only ones that came w/ e-locker) came with a larger R&P (8.4", all others were 8"....I think).
Without swapping the whole axle, your only option for a selectable locker is the ARB.
Actually the ARB is probably a better bet. The e-locker sometimes has trouble when it's wet (ask around). Plus, when you add the ARB you give yourself on-board air to fill up the tires.

Jim is entirely correct on this one. If you didn't have the locker from the factory, you can't just swap it in
The ring and pinion are a different size, so it's an axle swap or ARB.
Personally, I would prefer to have the ARB over the e-locker I have back there. It is unpredictable in wet conditions.
BTW, I have 4.10 gears and am locked, at least for the moment...

WATRD - what do you mean by the statement that the elocker is unpredictable in wet conditions? Do you mean the electronics have problems? Maybe I understand that statement now, I thought you meant it acted different than the arb when locked up on wet stuff. Anyway, you can lock/unlock the elocker manually if you have to. If you blow a line on the arb, it gets unlocked. That can be bad news in some cases.
Jay - I'm surprised at the price you would have to pay for that. Makes me feel not as bad. Oh, I was quoted about $1000 for it, but the guy would have given me 25% off. Still, I got mine used for much less

Yes apparently, poplular opinion is that I have the 8.4. So my option is to replace the entire rear axle assembly. Possibly still do-able. Ive seen some used complete axle housings for cheap. Ill keep ya posted.

Not sure about the date on this thread but...i was looking at the chart for axle ratio then found this one the chart says that my truck a 98 TRD with locking diff has 8.4" 4:10 gears. Why can't Jay put a factory locker in? Did I read something wrong?

Because the factory locker was only available in an 8" diff.
