exterior emblem help needed

I want to fix my "Sport Edition" emblem from this (above):

To this:

Anyone on how to do this without hurting the paint? Also, instead of putting the emblems back on "stock" I have thought about getting the 03' and newer "Sport Edition" emblem and cutting it so it just says "Sport" and putting it where the "Limited" goes behind the rear doors on each side. Thoughts?

Anyway, here is pics after a wash and wax with Turtle Wax Ice:

Mine is a rare ALL black with gray leather. I went to the stealer today to get a rear window wiper blade and they told me that they wanted to buy it from me. Boy are they desperate!

I know what everyone is going to say. "Get a lift!" I am planning on getting the system 3.0 from Sonoran steel but I don't know how much I like the Tokiko shocks. I wanted to put the System 3.0 and put Bilsteen's on it instead. I am also planning on acquiring some 231 mm tundra brakes to put on it too.

Ok, found the emblem. Now how do I remove the old one? Same as rear emblems? It seems like these "Sport Edition" emblems are really flush to the door.

Im not exactly sure but i think you can use a heat gun and they will peel right off. Then use some goo gone or mild soap to get rid of the sticky stuff left behind.

Heat gun and fishing line should work just fine. Then use some elbow grease and a cleaner of your choice to remove the left over glue off the door. You'll probably be left with a ghost emblem on the door too. Not sure, but maybe you could clar bar or wet sand to get it off.

BTW, did you purchase the vehicle new or used?

Fishing line works. Just cut back and forth. Careful on your fingers, best to wear gloves. It will leave some of the foam adheasive. Acrysol or xylene will remove it.

That's one gorgeous 4runner. Exactly what I was looking for when I got mine. I'm jealous.

Keep us posted on your Tundra upgrade, I'm curious as to how the 231mm's will fit under those wheels.

I actually don't have a heat gun. Would a good blow dryer work? I just ordered my decal. The dealer here is having a 25% off all parts day on Black Friday. I wish I had money for the cool TRD exhaust or something because that would really save me some dough.

Thanks all. I actually looked for 6 straight months every single day for mine to find a black sport with decent mileage on it. Purchased 4/1/2009. When I saw this one, I went and drove it, looked at it good and bought it and it was only posted a few hours. I got it for $8500 with 110K on it. Collateral was $11,900 on my loan on the day of purchase. TB/WP wasn't done on it and the tires needed to be replaced. Now all has been done.

From my research, the 231mm will work with my style of rims without shaving material off of them.

I replaced mine for the same reason - they were peeling apart. They come off pretty easily like others have said. I made my own custom badges to replace them with.

Good Luck!

Dental floss is also really good at emblem removal.

imho:

ditch that emblem. it doesn't even look toyota oem. looks like a dealer installed sticker that you could buy at pep boys.

THEN pull off them chrome emblems and spray 'em with VHT Nightshades for a black chrome effect. reapply with 3M VHB tape.

that's a great truck, for sure. the emblem looks like a pimple on a pretty face.

Very, very nice T4R! It must be really rare; I've never seen any runner with grey leather before!

I think that a blow dryer would work, with some fishing line or dental floss, though I have never removed badges before. But yeah, as stated before, I would be careful not to burn that gorgeous paint.

They are really rare emblems. They only made them in 2002 and only the Sport Edition obviously. I just ordered one from the stealer.

Where do you get the supplies that you mention? Anywhere else besides online?

My wife thinks I am crazy for spending $15 to fix it. Ha ha. I also thought about placing them up behind the passenger doors where the Limiteds have the emblem (in certain years). But I think I like it more on the door.

Well, got it fixed. Here is what I did:
First I heated the emblem up with my wife's hairdryer:

It took a bit because it was cold outside. Then I used waxed dental floss to pull it off. I used several yards of it because it would break. The more I heated the emblem up, the easier it came off. It actually tore my emblem in 2 pieces, here is one half:

But I was able to heat it up again and take it all off so the door looked like this, with some water spots:

I then used this stuff:

It took a while because I was careful, you can take paint off with this stuff if you try. I was pretty conservative in using it. I tried a paper towel but it just tore. I used a microfiber towel from Autozone to get all the glue off:

Then I waxed with this stuff (the bees knees BTW):

I did a big area to make it look all the same. I wiped all that wax off, then I finished up with my favorite. Turtle Wax Ice (the bees knees X2):

This stuff is so cool because it goes on clear, if you miss a bit taking the excess off, you can't tell. It doesn't leave any residue after you clean it off either. You probably can't tell I took a picture of the door here:

That is how well it works. I love it. You can't hardly tell there is a "ghost emblem" on the door. I then placed the new emblem I got from the dealership:

Sorry for the crappy pics, but it was cold out side and I didn't have good lighting to take the picture, in fact the camera would only take the picture if it saw my reflection on the black paint after I waxed it. Looks like new. I was barely able to tell where the old emblem was so I could get this one on straight.

To my knowledge, the furthest front skid plate of 3 (in my pic it is gray), only came on the 2002 models. I have seen them on a limited number of the Sequoias but for some reason they are really rare. It seems that the 2002 4Runner has some rare, single year additions (i.e. Sport Edition door emblems and front skid plate that you are talking about). So, if you want one, go to car-part.com and look at 2002 4Runners and see what a junk yard wants for one. I don't know if the holes will be there to install it on your rig. I can take pics of it but basically there are 2 brackets that hold it up from underneath the bumper. Let me know if you want a pic and where and I can post it.

I knew they were 02 specific, I just can't seem to locate one. I've been at the dealer for it twice and they have no idea what I'm talking about. They are more common on the newer ones. I'm so pissed about finding one, Im almost tempted to "mall jack" one. I would never, but I'm THAT frustrated.

Go to car-part.com and look up "front bumper". It will have phone number to the junk yard if they have the bumper. Call them and see what they want for the skid. I found my EVAP canister for $50 (a $400 part) w/ 50K on it through car-part.com. Try that. There are TONS of 02' Runners on there.

Holy old thread bump, I know..

My emblems have been peeling for a while now. First it was one side, now the other one has started to follow suit.

Do you happen to have the part numbers for that? I have searched all over the place and cant find anything! If not its cool, just dont like to walk up to the parts counter and make the guy have to look for the part in the system.
