Extended warranty?

I have a 2000 Limited 4runner, 4wd with 34, 000 miles and in service for 2 1/2 years. I have looked into the Toyota Extended Care Platinum Plan for 7 yr/100,000 miles. The retail cost with no deductible is $1475, and a local Toyota dealer will give it to me for $870.00.

Should I do it? Pros/cons please. I have to pull the trigger before it hits 36,000 miles.

Warranty

I never have a vehicle that is not under factory/dealer warranty or some type of full vehicle warranty while I am still paying for it. Consider it insurance.

If you are going to keep the vehilce up to 7 more years or 100,000 then it's worth it, if you are going to trade in a year, you are wasting money because they won't give it all back.

My 0.02

Personally I wouldn't.

Does the warranty pay for all of your periodic maintenance?

Use the $860 to pay for regular oil, lube, filters, transmission, and tire maintenance instead.

It's not like well-maintained Toyota's are known for developing mechanical problems.

Just my $0.02

I wouldnt do it. Its a rip if you ask me.

The probability of you using it is slim, especially on a Toyota. Otherwise, it would be a money-losing deal for them, and they would never offer it.

Besides, you will still have the 5yr/60K powertrain warranty. Chances are you will use that before anything else.

I say skip it. Take the $1475 and invest it.

I said it was $870, the list on it was $1475.00.

I am also paying off my car loan early when I refinance my house (so I can deduct the interest and significantly reduce my monthly payment).

I would like the peace of mind, and plan on keeping the vehicle for at least 5 more years, and around 100,000 miles total.

I wasn't asking if you would do it for $500, but whether you would do it for $870.

Edit: Just jokin with ya!

I am sure you can figure it out by using deductive reasoning.

I say fuggetaboutit. Put it into a sinking fund instead. If you don't use it (likely), you'll have enough for a vacation in seven years.

Also, look around the 'net for deals. ANY dealer in the US can quote Extra-Care policies, they're not limited by primary market boundaries. I wouldn't consider aftermarket with their checkered history.

I would only go with Toyota, never extended. The $870 was the lowest price, and that was after calling many Toyota dealers.

I just feel that one major problem after 60,000 and I could be out a boatload of money. To me it is worth $870.00 to have peace of mind.

Anyone ever have a repair done under the Toyota Extended Care and have any comments?

So you'd rather pay the $870 now and GUARANTEE that you are out a boatload of money?

You could buy a ford or chevy then you could be positive you would get to use the extended warranty.

Most of what I have read is to stay away from the extended warrantys on just about anything you buy.

Just my vote

Well, I bit the bullet and got the extended warranty. $870.00 for 7/100 Platinum Toyota Exended Care coverage was a hell of a deal...if anyone got it lower I would like to know.

I debated whether to get it, and after reading some pros and cons on this and other boards, I decided to do it. My last 4runner would have used up this coverage for a few small things that crapped out after the 3/36 bumper to bumper (antenna motor, ac, etc.) so I figured I would cover myself this time just in case.

My $ .02

you'll have to come back in 7 years, and tell us weather or not they did $870 worth of work.

I think I wouldn't have went for it, Especially being a Toyota, But hopefulyl it's the right choice for you

extended warranty refund

when I bought my 00 4R SR5 used in May the dealer offered me 5yr/80K at $1300 - but get this, if unused after 5 years the entire price is refunded! No lie - I have the paperwork! As an owner of 89 Supra that's never hiccupped even once I know extended warranty is not worth it, but all I'm losing here is potential interest I could have earned off the $1300. Couldn't pass it up. Anyone else heard of such a deal?

I have never heard of that, but couldn't you end up getting screw@d? What if there is a minor problem, say $100.00 worth. Do you get back the portion that was not used, $1200.00?

If not, that is not a very good deal, considering you get 5/60 from the factory on the major stuff.
