Experience with Unichip for 3.4l 4Runner?

I was looking at the Unichip website and noticed they had a chip for my 4Runner. Gains are supposedly 20 hp and 30 ft/lbs of torque for a truck with an intake an exhaust, which mine has. Price is right around $400. Does anybody have any experience with these chips on their 4Runners/Tacomas? It doesn't seem like too bad of price for the gain.

Gadget tried something like that: http://www.gadgetonline.com/Fuel.htm

Quote from link above:
ECU Upgrade:

JET ECU Upgrade:

I was looking through the Performance Products catalogue and saw the listing for the JET Chip. It claimed a 17HP increase. Well that sounded great.

I visited a friend who owns a auto salvage chain. He was able to get a spare ECU for my 4Runner. I installed it in my 4Runner to verify that is worked, and then sent it off to JET. I had it back the second day.

I installed it and took it for a drive. I was very disappointed that I did not notice any difference. I called JET to inquire and was told it takes 100 miles for the computer to adjust itself. I drove for quiet a while and never really noticed a difference. I even swapped back and forth with my stock ECU and still could not notice any difference in the way it performed.

I do not recommend the JET ECU upgrade.

Thanks for the info. I noticed the writeup on the EL Prototypes ECU reflash, but it looks like they aren't in business anymore anyways. Any other chips or ECU reflashes out there that are worth it?

Well there have been reported gains with NA engines from using a piggy back controller but they are mainly used for blown engines. Contact URD for details about what controller you could use and what kind of gains you might see. http://www.urdusa.com/

Something like this unit: http://www.urdusa.com/product_info.p..._id=1260198051

I'm using the URD MAF/Timing Calibrator and it works very good for tuning my boosted engine. You really need a wide band A/F gauge to tune it though. So add in that cost too.

Cool, I have emailed them and will be pursuing this product more. I like URD and they have been very helpful in the past, so I would like to do business with them. However, I have no experience at all with tuning and don't own a wide band scanner. So, I'm not sure how difficult it would be for me to get my truck tuned to it's fullest potential.

My friend asked me if it would be possible to tune using a oscilloscope; that way I wouldn't have to buy a A/F metering device.

I don't see anyway that could be done on a 98, MAYBE if someone was really good with Toyota diagnostics it could be done with the newer trucks (like 2000+) which use a wideband A/F sensor instead of the old standard O2 sensor. But even then the person would need data logging to do a road tune. I think the kind of tools involved with all that would cost more than a standalone wideband gauge (unless they owned them already). The cost of a wideband gauge has come down a lot in price over the last 10 years, I guess they used to cost thousands, but now you can get one for $400. This is similar to what I use: http://www.urdusa.com/product_info.p...s_id=540003768

Then if you later decided to put on a supercharger you'd already have some of what you need to tune that.

I moved my hazard switch and mounted mine up in its place:

Okay, so I really need to find a wide band metering device to use in order to tune?

I threw in the unichip a while back and have been pleased with it so far. At first I thought the mapping was going to be "cookie cutter", but it's worked very well for my application.

Talk to Gadget, maybe he could set you up with a "cookie cutter" fuel map that you could use without a tune, but keep in mind you are trying to improve on an ECU fuel map set up by Toyota engineers that uses constant feed back from sensors to self-adjust. You could make it worse instead of better. If you don't have the proper tools to see what's going on, its harder.

Would you say you noticed the advertised dynoed 35hp at the crank increase for the S/C with the Unichip?
