Exhaust Question...

Well I think I'm getting a little ahead of myself right now, but I really want to get a new exhaust system for my 4Runner. I've read almost every post on this board about exhaust, and i'm thinking about getting a Borla Exhaust system. But I am also open to suggestions as to what I should get. What I want is an exhaust that has a nice low sound to it, and is kind of loud (loud enough I know it's there, and people can hear me coming
) Would it be a good idea for me to get a pre-made (I think that's the right term for it) system (I found a Borla System at Summit, http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=26501 ) or should I go to a local exhaust shop to get a custom one done? Also if I get a pre-made one how hard is it to install? I read UKMyers' write up on installing his Borla, and it didn't sound hard at all, it seemed like something I would be able to do. My question is, does it require any welding? Because I have zero experience welding, and if it does I'll just take it down to the exhaust shop and have it installed. So which way would be cheaper for me to do? I'm a poor college student, and I'm worried that if I spend $400 on the pre-made Borla one, that I'll have to spend even more to have it installed if I can't do it myself.

Get yourself a custom cat-back system made up. Check out mufflers from Magnaflow (which I have and really like), Vortex, and Dynomax. Get 2.25" tubing from the catalytic converter all the way to the rear. That way you shouldn't lose any low-end torque. My whole custom setup was only about $225 - quite a bit cheaper than $400.

I was just reading about (and listening to) the Magnaflow Mufflers on Corey's exhaust page, and that seems to be exactly what I want. I'm definitely going to go with the custom cat-back system made, especially since it'll be cheaper

What I did was buy a Dynomax and have the shop fab new pipes and flanges to both ends so that (if I wanted) I could swap in/out the new muffler and the OEM muffler. Just ask for a 2nd set of flanges while you're there.
My muffler was about $40. Parts and labor was about $120. Thus, it is still alot cheaper than a TRD system, can be swapped out, and is a perfect custom fit:

At the end i said there was a thumping sound when I went over the bumps. Turned out that the rear pipe needed to be moved over about a 1/2" b/c the bolt end that supports the top rear passenger shock was hitting it when I went over bumps. That was taken care of.
Also, I removed this system and will be swapping into my 98 soon.

I'm probably going to get the Magnaflow (I want people to hear me coming a mile away
) And it's definitely a HUGE relief to hear that I won't have to dish out $400
I can handle about $200 :beaver: So hopefully sometime soon I'll go down to the local exhause shop, and see how much it'll cost to get a custom cat-back system made and installed.

Definetly follow the advice above. I looked at the TRD, Borla, etc stuff and ended up going the "custom" way; although I put a 3" pipe from the cat back. Later I heard this was a bad idea. I was hoping with the Supercharger, it wouldn't be as bad. Don't know if it is better or worse than a 2.5", but I like the way it sounds.
