Engine part vibrating and smoking

So below I have place a pic with an arrow to a part that is not working correctly. I had my 96 4runner parked for 5 months because of some personal reasons. I took it out and was in the mountains when this thing went out.

All of a sudden this part started to smoke and now it vibrates about every 30 seconds. I don't know what part it is and what it does. Any help?

Let me know if more info is needed. Not really sure what would be relevant enough to post.

96 4runner engine problem

I am trying to figure out what this part is. It seems to not be working correctly. It started to smoke and now it kind of makes a vibrating noise. Can someone let me know what part this is? Also any knowledge on how easy it is to repair or replace. Thanks in advanced.

It wont let me add the picture since I have it up in another thread so here is a link to the part in question.

Here's a link to a tacoma FSM, I know taco WTF ?!?
But they have the same engines as you may know and mainly have the same mechanical components..

Thanks for the response. I apologize I don't have the specific engine info off the top of my head. I know its 4 wheel drive but not too sure beyond that. I'm at work and its parked at my girlfriends place. I don't really have access to it at this time.

Well yeah, 6cyl in a 96 would be a 3.4L

Anyway, If that thing is smoking replace it ?
Call up Josh ( Member Deathcougar) and see if he has one..

That's your charcoal canister. The noise is common for this unit. mine has made that noise for years.

Never done it.

But IMO it would just be a bolt out bolt in procedure.
Just make sure you at least label all the hoses so you get those back on the right spot on the new one..

So that's the charcoal canister huh? Mine buzzes about every 30 seconds but never smoked! I may have to look into replacing it also. Did you fix yours yet man?

I haven't fixed it yet. Probably wont be able to for about a week. It smoked once when I think it went out but has not smoked since. I'm probably going to look for one at a junk yard. I looked online and so far $225 was the cheapest Blah.

The mooing 'yota seems to be pretty commonplace (including my 96) so I did a quick little google turned up this little gem...

Now I'm trying to decide if I wanna do this or if I'd miss its friendly little buzz too much.

Yes the noise is perfectly normal. I've never come across that fix before, interesting. Doesn't really bother me much anymore now that I know what's buzzing and why. When I first got the truck it was kinda puzzling though!
