I don't know if there is a vacuum pump on yours or if it is in a different location. That pumps air to pressurize the fuel system (not fuel but vapors). It probably will make noise in that case. If it is spewing vapors, you probably have a hole or a cracked hose or something. It should be completely sealed. Hopefully it is just a hose that is leaking. If it is the canister, they are like $400. It is pretty easy to replace but impossible to fix if there is a hole. Just make sure you put the hoses OVER THE EXACT SAME PORT WHERE THEY WERE BEFORE!
I have taken mine out of my 02' a few times. Mine is a completely different part though....

The check engine light did turn on and wont turn off now. Its been running just fine. Im taking it up to the mountains this weekend and will be going off road a little so we will see how she holds up.
