theres no way to say without hearing it sadly. it could be anything. i've heard people talk about that thinking their engine is bad, and all it was was a loose intake box. other times exhaust leaks, intake leaks, loose brackets. never know man.

valves can make some ticking. not really a chattering noise that i know of. they would have to be really horrable to make your truck run bad seeing how tacos use lifters instead of rockers. basically there's no adjustments to make like on the older ones. they have caps on the valves that provide the right space. sometimes those can get worn down. and need to be precisely replaced. but like i said. without hearing it i can't really say. sorry dude.

what engine to you have? 2.7 four cylinder. or 3.4 6 cylinder? manual, automatic? try shifting down while speeding up, and see if still does it. your engine rpm will be higher, so it may stop, or be more aggressive. could only be while under a heavy load at low rpms, or it could be doing it all the time, which means it may not be inside your engine.
listen for it getting louder, or speeding up, or even stopping while you are shifting down.

Do you put 87 or 91 octane? If I put 87 or 89 octane on my 1997 4Runner SR5 3.4L every time I get on the gas to pass somebody my engine will knock. What you are hearing is probably engine/piston slap from using low octane gas. That is at least my experience. Good luck!

I'm 100% convinced that running 87 octane is the cause of the engine noise.

I have an 86 22re with 256k and I have a slight tick when I'm running around 2k or taking off in first. It's not really persistent but will throw off a few random ones. It's similar to the sound that alot of these engines make when first cranking up. And ideas?

I don't think octane would cause chatter. octane would cause a ping (tinny metal sound). a chatter would have something more to do with tranny. When you shift down does the sound disappear?

Does the ticking speed up with the rpms?

Have you checked for anything loose? Plastic, medal, etc.

Yea. I can actually go under the hood and pull the throttle and hear it. It sounds like it's coming from the valve cover just above the exhaust

Have you checked your spark plugs and wires? A spark tapping can occur if it is arcing. Also I was thinking of a vacuum leak and I have also heard about the timing chain slapping on the 22RE. I can't really tell what it may be without hearing it myself. Is there a way I could tap a fork against a plastic cup or something like that to hear what it sounds like, or maybe a video that sounds like your truck. I know for a fact there are tons of 22RE videos on the internet.

The only sound I can explain it to is the sound alot of people have on a could startup but that sound is alot more vigorous compared to a few ticks I have while driving. And wires are new and I have bosch platinum +2 for plugs which u dont have to gap and there about 7500 miles old

At this point I have no idea. All I can tell you is to drive it and keep an ear on the sound. If it gets worse quickly then it may be time for a valve adjustment or a timing chain change. Maybe start pulling vacuum lines and see if sound changes when you pull them.

Something else I forgot about is your injectors make ticking sounds too. Check out this thread:

Maybe you can find something on here. Sorry I can't help you any further. Good luck
