I suspect that the 22R engine in my '84 has been swapped out at some point. I noticed that there is a number stamped on the block behind the alternator. Can I use this number to determine the year of the current engine?
The reason I think the engine has been swapped is that the oil pan has signs of being re-painted and the exhaust manifold is apparently an '85 and up style, because I had a friend give me an '84 manifold, but it looks very different than the manifold that I have.

You could have a newer engine. 85 and up have single row timing chains - you could tell be removing the valve cover. I do not know how to check the # though.

 

It's definately a single row timing chain.
The number is 0942711. Can we tell the vintage from this number?
