electric locker update

Well, I finished the wiring on Tuesday (took me like half an hour). We just got done "bench testing" it in the back of my 4Runner. If anyone else does this, solder the connections! I made the mistake of using butt connectors, which gave me an intermittent connection, so now I have to go back in and solder everything. But it works great!!! Here's a video of the locker engaging/disengaging:

Electric Locker

Is that a Toyota item, or an aftermarket unit. I saw infor about an Eaton ELocker. Is that the same sort of device?

LOCKER

The locker is a Toyota item stock on some 4-runner and trucks. The toyota locker fullly lockes the rear. The Eaton lockes the rear with tire spin.

Lockers

Is the best option for 2nd Gen runners an ARB? I know they are big $, but they get great reviews. Are there any other units I should consider?

lockers

ARB air locker are great. but if you rip a air line they stop working. The toyota locker you must be wired up to work. I like detroit locker but they can be noise. It all up to you and want kind of wheeling you do. Most of the guy are going with the toyota e-locker and i think that the one i want to.

Toy Elocker

Do they have those for the 2nd Gen? Where those an option on Runners and Trucks? If so, I can probably find them in a junkyard, right? Is there something that would give away if a vehicle had this option? Did they have these for the front and rear?

Phong, Great work. So what else was involved in wiring in addition to the plug and play aspects of the factory switch and locker ecu?

It's actually unbelievably simple. You just cut 4 lines away from the ECU harness, and then run them to the differential locker. They are M1, M2 (motor power) and REL1, REL2 (relays). There's a 5th line (RLP) that you have to tap into (I used a scotch-lock) for "locked detection". This RLP works in conjunction with the ABS ECU so you can't cut it. There's also two grounds from the diff. locker, which altogether, accounts for the 7 lines coming from the locker.

That's it in a nutshell... of course, my write-up will be more descriptive

BTW, did you ever get my payment?

Sounds good, looking forward to the detailed write up after it is all done and tested. Does your install work around the limitation whereas the locker will only activate if in 4LO and under 5MPH, or did you keep that in as a saftey feature.

No, I did not get the payment yet.

It's currently working just like the factory system. I'll eventually disable the 4LO safety, although I've heard it confuses the transmission, and it shifts as if it were in 4LO. I'll probably leave the 5mph safety in. But, one thing at a time man

I can't believe you haven't gotten the MO yet. I put it in the mailbox on Friday, so it should have gone out on Saturday. If you don't get it by the weekend, let me know. I'll put another one in the mail. Those are gonna be some expensive switches
