E locker?

Hey guys, I've done a search through the page but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for... I have a 99 4Runner and I've sourced out a 02 TRD Taco that has been written off. I what to grab the rear locker out of this thing. So my question is: how do I go about doing this? what part off the Taco am I going to need? will it swap over without have to cut or weld anything.....and do I need the tranny or front gears or anything?
As much detail as you can give my on this subject would be awsome. I'm not too mechanically inclined(I'll have someone else install all this stuff) so simple person talk would be nice too!! thanx people!
Matt

you'll need just the 3rd. check the paint on the end of the pinion gear and someone here can match the colour with the proper gear ratio. if its the same as your current setup, you wont have to regear. if its different, you'll have to regear either the elocker to match the front, or the front to match the elocker. you'll also need the wiring harness that comes off the motor (not absolutely needed, but definitely makes wiring it up alot easier, and oem correct of course).

have a look at this page everything you've wanted to know about swapping in an elocked 3rd but were afraid to ask is all on there my friend..

good luck!

the whole taco axle would require new spring perches & shock mounts

Okay, I didn't know that Toyota made 4Runners with a factory diff lock option! would it be an easier proposition for me to sourse out a 4runner rear axle w/ a locker than going for the TRD taco diff? I'm thinking it would.

Get the 4Runner rear axle/diff, which is an 8" diff. The tacomas use an 8.4" rear diffy, and are leaf sprung.

Wow, you actually got something wrong, the e-lockers in either 4Runners or Tacos have 8" diffs. There was never an 8.4" e-locker......

As for axles the Taco axle won't fit under the 4Runner, different design, only the third member, after a bit of housing modification.

There are plenty of threads
on this subject, surprised you didn't find much....

What other parts you will need is the switch to activate the locker, the e-locker ECU(under the drivers side kick panel) and wiring harness(located under the driver side floor trim)

it's not that I didn't find much it's just that I found threads with so much crap to read through that it got all garbled.....I'm basically looking for a step by step how to type thing. You guys have been a hell of a help and I'd like to thank all of you that have lended your advice.

One more thing.....I have to change my ECU!! holy crap.....should I just go ARB? lol

So basically....the rear diff out of a Elocked 4runner, ECU out of a Elocked 4runner, the switch to activate this little sucker, and the wiring harness(I'm assuming the harness is just for the Elocker....not the whole damn truck right?)

Again, sorry for all the Questions, I'm just new to Toyota's. This is my first one. So far I'm loving it, it's just screaming to be locked up though.

most guys i know that retrofitted their 'E' didnt use the ECU. just throw in a couple relays, a DPDT switch, a bit-o-wire here n there..n youre good to go. The ecu just monitors the wheelspeed & tcase to enable the safety features doesnt it?

Oh yeah......interesting. I also read in that link that Gerret gave me there(btw man thanx! that is exactly what I was looking for) that "downey" make's a manuel cable control upgrade for Toyota elockers....this may just be the way to go for me. I don't really like like push button 4x4 so between a push button and manuel locker......I like the later. I'm going to look into this option further.

does anyone have an estimated cost on retrofitting and e-locker if all of the parts were bought from a Toyota dealership against if the the axle or 3rd was salvaged?
