Dynomax installation complete

I finally got my s*** together and found a place to install a Dynomax 17747 for me. So for $87.90 I managed to get it done.

I ordered the muffler from Summit for $47.90 with shipping and a local shop installed it for $40. Not bad, all told.

I'm enjoying it so far, but find the resonance at around 1500 rpm a little annoying. I may get used to it or I may just give in and install a resonator tip. I'll try to hold out for a couple of hundred miles and then decide.

Here's a "thank you" to all who offered advice.

BTW, Summit deserves all the business they can get. I've ordered from them twice and both times their service, shipping charges and time have far surpassed expectations. They're GREAT to do business with!

I guess I must just be getting old! I want a nice, smooth, rich sound. Even without the tip, it's most of the way there.

That is good to hear. I am glad that you like it alot. I like mine and I like the resonance too. I think it sounds good and adds some kick to the sound. I also got my muffler from Summit. I too have the same opinions as you. I think they provided great service and they were friendly and helpful! I like my muffler and Summit. I am glad to hear that you do too! Nice!!! :fireman:

No problem. It never even occurred to me that you weren't kidding.

UPDATE: So far I'm finding myself a little disappointed about the sound of this exhaust. I think it's at least partly because of my automatic trans. All cars I've ever had with a "sporty" sounding exhaust have been 4- and 5-speeds. Hearing the louder exhaust when I'm not controlling the shifts is a little weird. I hope I get used to it. Does this make any sense?

If the Monza tip doesn't do the trick and I don't get used to the sound, I may be headed back to my stock muffler. We'll see.

Makes sence. I miss a stick where you can rev up the exhaust, and then listen to it when coasting under compression.

With the auto, you only hear it when you gas it.
If just cruising slightly, or letting off the gas, it's almost silent.

With a stick, you have virtually total control of the vehicle, starting with the timing of the shifts and including the sound of the exhaust. With the auto, the torque converter totally changes how the tone of the exhaust responds to the position of the gas pedal.

Another thing is that with a stick, your acceleration exhaust sound is directly determined by your rate of acceleration and your shift points. With the auto, you get a lot more sound than your rate of acceleration would normally provide. A little increase in the throttle makes a lot more noise than it does with a stick.

Funny, but this is making miss my 5-speed more than anything else has. I'd LOVE this sound if I was doin' the shifting.

My thoughts exactly. But I'm not doin' a tranny swap in this rig
Unless Mark R shows up with the goods and himself to lend a hand.
Did you see his write-up?

Welllll, I feel like this experience is going backwards; instead of getting used to it, it's starting to annoy me. I'm trying to decide whether to just revert to stock tomorrow or wait until the Pacesetter Monza tip gets here Monday in hopes of it working miracles.

I've read all results of every search request I could think of on the Dynomax and resonator tips. Most of you guys say the tip takes out the resonance, but doesn't lower the tone. If that's the case, I think it's gonna have to go.

I'm gonna try to hold out until Monday to give it a chance, but barring magic, I may just have a Dynomax and a Pacesetter tip for sale.

Summit is really on top of things. I just got the Pacesetter tip from them; WOW! I didn't expect it until Monday at the earliest!

Anyway, I shoved it in the exhaust pipe and am amazed at the difference. I think everything's gonna stay. It sounds much mellower and smoother, even though there's a lot of air escaping around the tip 'cuz it's not attached to anything.

Can't get it installed until Tuesday, but everything looks a lot more promising than it did yesterday.

Anybody out there use that Monsa Pacesetter resonated tip with a Flowmaster muff or any other muff other than the Dynomax?

Maybe late tonight or sometime tomorrow. I have guests arriving soon.

I'm a lousy typist, so I usually avoid live chat, but whatever.

What do you need to know? Wanna try e-mail? Or just a phone call is fine with me.
