Exclamation Downey IFS truss

I have been thinking of getting one of these soon, but I have a few questions.

I notice on their webpage they have two different models listed. One for 86-88 (17") and one for 89-95 (16"). This is what I don't really understand, I measued between my rear LCA mounts and it was 17-17.5" or so, exactly the same measurement as the front LCA mounts so I know they aren't bent. Did anyone have problems on their 2nd gens with the 16" truss?

Also, does anyone have any pictures of the Downey truss installed? Maybe some tips on drilling through the LCA mounts?

Thanks a lot,
Bryan

I have had one of these on my '88 truck for about 7 years. It's about the only decent thing Downey has ever made.

You might want to call them to confirm which one you need.
I just measured mine and here is what I found: the space between the factory drop frame/A-arm mounts is 17". The truss I have has about 1/4" of space (on each side) between it and the frame. I guess they measure the crossmember on the inside, like I did below. Mine must be the 16 incher, and it fits my '88.

Here is shot looking forward from below the driver's door:

And here is one looking at it from the front, on the driver's side:

As for mounting it, just take your time and keep the drill as straight as possible. For holes that big you'll want to run the drill at a slower speed. If you can clamp the crossmember in place while you drill that will work best. Drill one hole at a time, put the bolt in, then start the next hole.

Sounds like you need to look at this:
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/reviews/frame_brace/

Looks to be custom made so there should be no questions as to fit.

Hmm, well I called Downey this morning before work and told them that mine measured 17" between the two control arm mounts, they recomended that I buy the 86-88 one instead of the 89-95 one and said that they have had other people with newer toyota's need to buy the longer one, he didn't explain why exactly. I'm pretty sure my arms arent bent, because the front measures 17" as well, maybe toyota went back to 17" from 16"?

I guess I will order a 17" tomorrow...

actually, the more i think of it, I really don't know which one I should order.

OK! I called them again, got it all sorted out. Ordered the 16". The guy was pretty cool, he went and measured the truss from the bolt on points and stuff, which helped a lot.
Thanks for the help guys.

I tried to order that part a while back from NWOR and they said their manufacturer hadn't made one for a while and they had been on backorder for a while. I'm tired of doing alignments.....

Does anyone know how long the entire length of the 16.75" truss is? (not just the center round section)

Hey jimabena74 did you get their mega travel ball joints??
If you did watch out because all they do is machine out a top section making it weaker.
It will give more travel ,but at price. I ordered those too and them returned them when I looked at them.

I got my truss on! It took a bit of effort, but it's sure nice to know I have it now. Now to get all the steel chips out of my hair.. (the pain about not having hair that short).
