Directions to replace an air/fuel sensor

I did a search and couldn't find it, but is there directions on how to replace an air/fule sensor? And how hard is it?

Thanks

Get under the truck and look on the exhaust pipe and hopefully you should be able to figure it out. Unscrew and then screw and pull the EFI fuse to reset the system.

I think Skrillah's description is entirely adequate, but if you want more info:

http://www.4runners.org/writeups/02sensor/index.html

The only hard part is forking over the $ for a new sensor.

just remember your a/f sensor is before the cat, and since you say you have an a/f sensor, makes me think you have a cali edition, so you might have two cats

Not sure on that. I have a 2001 4WD 4Runner with the 3.4 that I bought new in Texas. I was at the dealer last week and priced out the sensor. From my serial number they told me I have an A/F sensor not an O2 sensor. The cost was much higher and like I said this was not a Calif vehicle.

My 0-1 Tacoma is not a Calif. addition and it has a A/F sensor. It checks the Air /Fuel flow ratio and most all Tacoma's have them. I could be wrong but that's my understanding. Don't know why it would have anything to do with Calif restrictions.
Anyway, It's between the cat and the engine and it has 2 nuts on it. You will also need to order a new gasket as most of them do not come with the gasket and they don't bother to tell you that. You may have to spray the nuts with something like rust blaster a few times to get them loose. You will also need a small screw driver to undo the disconnects to the wires.
When you replace it do yourself a favor and put some never seize on the new nuts and on the studs before you replace it. It will save you allot of head aches down the road. It's also a good idea to spray the electric contacts with some kind of cleaner and sealer while your at it.They book says it should be replaced every 70,000 miles. Hope this helps, Mike

my truck was purchased new (8 miles on the odo) in florida and is a california emissions vehicle. look under your truck and see of you have two cats, just cause it wasnt purchased in cali doesnt mean its not a cali restricted vehicle. i am pretty sure that non cali 4runners have two O2 sensors and no A/F sensors.

According to the Underdog Racing Development website, all 2001 and 2002 Runners use the same A/F sensor. (Part # 234-9002 which is the the same A/F sensor used by 1999 Cali-spec 4Runners.) Prior to 2000, it appears that non-Cali 4Runners used different sensors, but since Ghostrider has a 2001, he does have a A/F sensor, regardless of Cali/Non-cali.

You can look at the Underdog Racing parts list by model year here:

The 2001 is very confusing. Sparkplugs.com shows a Denso 234-9002 not 9001. The local dealer shows a part number of 89467-35011 for my VIN. Anyone have a website that cross references Toyota to Denso?

Sorry Ghostrider- I mis-typed. The URD site also shows the part # for a 2001 as 234-9002, the same as sparkplugs.com. Fixed it now.
