Diodes question

Hey all,

I want to add diodes to my map light mod so that they will come on either with dome light or with map switch (right now they both come one with either switch used).

I also want to add a diode in my AC line that will be turning on my taurus fan (I'm doing it this afternoon) whenever the AC is turned on; just as a precaution based on some other postings here.

Anyone have any advice on what rating or size diodes to buy? Can I use the same size for both applications?

Thanks for any help before I go to the Shack to look for parts. Those dudes there are usually clueless, so I wanted to know what I'm going in to buy before I get there!

About the AC /fan. You want the fan to come on when you turn on the AC? Is that right?
Im not sure what you want with the dome lights. I dont know what the mod is so if you could explain what you want to do we could suggest the best route.

Sorry about that! Here is the link to the map light situation I am referring to:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...threadid=19404

One of the responders to that mentioned putting diodes in the ground wires of the map lights to fix the "all lights turning on" problem therein.

Thanks for any help.

Oh, about the AC line. I want the taurus fan to come on anytime the AC is engaged like most have done here. After reading up on the install, some have put a diode in the trigger line for AC going to the fan controller to protect any "back" voltage from hitting the AC circuit when the AC is not on (or something like that). Sorry if I'm confusing.

I just figured that putting a one-way diode in the AC line while I'm installing would not be a bad idea to proctect it.

Please let me know if this makes sense!

Thanks!

ahh. ok. Just tell the guys at radio shak you are using them for 12 volt car applications. Heres a # that will work if they have them.(IN5408).
As for the AC question. If you want your taurus fan to come on when you turn on the AC. I myself would wire a relay to run the fan. The ac would trigger the relay to turn on the fan.I dont know how much current the fan draws but i would surely run a relay.

i just read your post. If your wiring the ac to a controller then the same diode will work. If you were wiring the ac trigger direct to the fan i would use a relay.

um.... you want diodes so that you can isolate one light from the other one right...that would probably be a 1 amp diode. for the fan--dont worry about the diode, backfeeding cannot happen on a spdt relay ( hopefully thats what your using )--if im correct, your worried about the ac turning on when the fan turns on. well, first make sure the ac is triggered by a +12v instead of a -12v. Wiring up the relay the wrong way would cause the resting position of the relay to send a pulse to the ac or the fan or both at the same time. diodes can help, but you could also use two relays, one for the ac and one for the fan. Oh, and if i was worried about high current spikes or something, i would use a 6 amp diode.

As I understand it, the diodes for the taurus fan are to protect the relay contacts from arcing when the fan is freewheeling, not to protect the ac circuitry. I have the diode in my truck, but I haven't installed it and I don't think I'm going to. I'll see which one it is later. Remind me if I forget.

There's a little explanation for the use of the diode in the fan install here

It's under their wiring diagram.
