Diff breather size

Has anyone ever used a 3/8" male brass niple in place of the toyota part? If I run a tap through first will a 3/8 nipple work? I ask because I read an article about using a 1/4 " npt nipple and I assumed it was a 1/4" nipple with the standard 1/2" thread....Guess what way to large .

I guess I'm asking will a 3/8" Dia thread into the old breather hole?

Thanks Chris

Are you looking to extend your rear diff breather?

breathers

Yes, Toyota doesn't have the parts and I had read somewhere that a guy used npt threads and just ran a tap in the hole first

The two Toyota parts cost maybe $10 from the dealer and work perfectly.

Problem

I talked to my toyota dealer over 3 weeks ago and he said the parts were on back order. I have already waited 3 weeks and now he says it going to be 2-4 more weeks. Has anyone ever used this application before with a 3/8" npt nipple

Sorry I can't be of more help, but it sounds like your dealer is "blowing smoke up your skirt." I order parts at my dealer on one day and in two days my parts are there. I can't imagine why two little standard fittings like those would be on back-order. I bet TOR could check for you and get them to you cheap.

I'm going to have to agree w/ wabbit. Either your dealer is too lazy or don't know WTF they're doing. You could probably even find the fittings at a local junkyard.

It works...I did it. Only costs 50 cents. Much cheaper than the dealer.

I bet 1/8" NPT would work better.

Fitting

I found that a 10mm fine thread air fitting screws right in. 1.24 each

Naw, just take a 3/8 bit and drill the hell out of it. Works fine...

But yeah, 1/8 is what I used I guess...its been a while. Here is Roger's Writeup on using the NPT fittings that I followed. http://4crawler.cruiserpages.com/4x4...html#Breathers

I have 1/8" fittings too.

I got two nipples and an elbow for less than 3 bucks. Home Depot, Napa, Lowe's, any place that sells anything automotive or plumbing ought to have a big bin of them.

I just tore off the cap from the original breather, shoved a tube over it and hose clamped it in place. Seems to work.

My dealer didn't carry them either and I had to order them from www.1sttoyotaparts.com .

You can also get the parts from a Nissan Dealer. http://www.larsdennert.com/4runner/breather

I had a pile of Autometer metric adapter fittings. Two of them worked just fine to adapt from 10mm to 1/8 NPT.

I cringe every time I hear about people tapping the breather hole. I hope the hardened steel shavings find the magnetic drain plug before they chew up the gears too much.

I used a Nissan one up front and the Toyota part in back. If I had it to do over i'd save the $16 I spent and do it like Steve's (Robinhood150) suggestion for more like $3.
