I'm pretty new to the board yet and I was doing some reading about the deckplate mod. If I do this to our 4Runner how hard would it have to be raining for it to be necessary for me to put the cover back in place?

 

no need to put it on when raining. only when you cross deep water

i did the deckplate without adding the actual deckplate thus leaving a hold in the front on the intake. i also drilled holes on the bottom of the airbox for water to drain and added a k&n airfilter. Thru rain i've never taken in any water and have even taken it thru deep puddles spraying water everywhere.

 

So even if it's raining like a bastard and you hit big puddles it shouldn't be a worry? My wife just got this thing and I'd hate to foul it up while trying to improve it.

 

P.S. I just started distributing Aimsoil products so I have the filter on its way.

 

I've had the DP mod installed for almost 3 years now and have driven thru some incredible rain storms at highway speeds and thru nasty puddles. I was worried about it after I first installed it and would check it after a driving rain. I never found ANY water getting into the airbox and now I don't give it a second though. I keep the lid handy but have not once put it in.

 

how often does mud find its way throught the deckplate? Seems that mud could be restrictive of air at best, god forbid it got past the air filter...

 

Perhaps you need to understand that if you're driving in deep MUD, then it would be wise (a.k.a., common sense) to install the cap on the DP. Like others including myself have said, driving rain and deep puddles during normal roadway driving does not cause any intrusion into the airbox with the DP mod.

Yes, mud WOULD be restirctive to air flow, I'm sure. AND, if mud would get past the filter, a whole lot of other nasties would, too.

 

driving THROUGH deep mud wasnt really the concern i had, more the splatter effect i see evidenced on the underside of my hood and most of the engine everytime i get into even easy, muddy ruts...just seemed plausible the same splatter could wind up in the airfilter..

 

What about taking your truck to the car wash while the cap is off?

 

Car washes aren't an issue unless you actually have the hood open but otherwise it would be very hard tp ingest water except in what was mentioned above. There's plenty of people that have a open filter element on alot of vehicles incliuding one I had on my Eclipse and rain or snow was never an issue.

 

That's my only concern, should people be worried about using pressure wash bays? It'd be a heck of a lot easier if I could just leave it out, but I put it in at the bay and then forget to take it out and by the time I realize its still in there it's time to wash it again. I think I need to reset the ECU...do I leave the EFI fuse out for 30 minutes or somethin to do that?? I can't remember...sorry to hijack!

Yes, I would plug it while using a pressure washer under the hood.

The whole reset the ECU thing has never been proven to be effective. But, if it makes you feel better, pull it for 30 seconds.

I have done a ton of mods and tried the reset the ECU thing, and also forgot to do it. Never once was power delivery any different, nor was my MPG changed. Personally I think it should be on Snopes.com.

 

Yeah, I would definitely plug it in while washing under the hood but I mean just on top of the hood and on the bumper and just on the exterior I shouldn't have to worry about it right?

Right. You should have no problems. I have done that many times myself (getting the darn mud off!)

 

If pressure washing the vehicle with the hood closed, you don't need to install the cap. But if you're pressure washing the engine, then (duh...) yes, screw the cap on. Also, be sure not to point the pressure hose at your eyes or in your mouth...

 

Oh crap...thats what I was doing wrong...I used to just drink it out of the hose, I ALWAYS get thirsty when I'm there.
