If it were me, I'd save $200 and install a deck plate and drop-in filter.

Yeup... ditto.
You'll get plenty of airflow doing the deck plate mod with a good filter (Amsoil is an example). Plus, you'll have the option of closing it up and keeping things stock dry when you run through mud puddles.

Definitely the deck plate. I used the 4" and wasn't sure how anyone could squeeze a 6" plate on. I've heard that there is little benefit going larger than a 4" deckplate due to the max volume of air the intake can "gulp".

I got it online with free shipping so it barely cost me anything (another way of saying "I don't remember"). I think I went to a link provided by either Cebby or <96 Runner>

Sorry, can't really help you on that. I know nothing about the 8. I just seem to remember reading on a previous post that the deckplate on the V8 might not be worth it. Anyone else remember that or have I lost it?

Go with a 5" deckplate. I did the 6" and the outer plastic lip is a little high (it just looks funny) on the stock box.
As far as flow difference between the 4 and 5, I doubt its much - if any.
If I could do it over again, I would go 5. My .02

It is nice to know that there is a cheap tool for that now. Your truck looks good, are you planning on painting your fenders? Do you have any plans for the rear suspension?

Do not cut the hole until you have a dekplate to fit tho.
