Sorry bub, but no smart ass comments here.

Simply put, a dealer will never EVER pay what private party value is, because they need to make a profit.

$4k for a truck that will likely sell for $7-8K is a good price. Besides that, its all a calculated game to the dealer. If you think for one second the sales manager reprimanded his associates for offering you $4k, you are insane. Buy low, sell high. Its just that simple. Realistically, your truck is only worth $4-5K trade in value.

Well, this dealership just changed ownership and they are trying hard to make a good name for themselves. The delaer was a real cheeseball kinda guy. The ones that try to act slick and high pressure. "You ready to drive off right now in it?" I haven't even test driven it or agreed to any numbers.
The dealer said they can't sell a 4Runner for much more than $4000 since '05 Caravans are going for $9000. Huh? How are you comparing the two? The manager was upset because he went to the dealer asking him for my appraisal for my 4Runner. There was no appraisial. Manager wanted to know how they offered me $4000 without looking at it and if I was unhappy with the trade amount why didn't he do an appraisal to try and get more to make a sale. Found out my buddies dad is the son-in-law of the owner.

Sell your vehicle yourself...you will get more money for it.

Dealers are in business to make profit, not you profit.

Nothing to add that hasn't been said, other than to add the "I've been there" comment. Back in '05 when I was selling my '97 Limited, it was mint. Dealer maintained since new, I was 2'nd owner, 190,000k (about what, 110 miles). I needed to unload it, so I approached some dealers for a consignment deal. None would offer me more than $4500. Autotrader didn't have a listing on one below $8k, most were around $12-14k.

Eventually I sold it to my brother, who proceeded to test it's structural integrity against a '05 Chevy Crew cab. I've since bought it back and it's currently at the bodyshop.

Moral: Sell it privately.

Yeah I went back to the dealer and he said it would look like a conflict of interest if he reprimanded an employee then I end up with a better trade in value. He offered me the same for the trade but discounted the truck $2800. He said it was as if he was giving me more and it would discount the sales tax too. The numbers were still just a little higher than I wanted and after looking at the truck i noticed it had a lot of scuffs down the sides from off roading and the trailer brake controller wasn't very comforting about how long the transmission would last. Needed a brake job and a new taillight. Oh well I'll selll out right and find something. No biggie
