Big John:

The 96-98 front cupholder is the absolute worst. If you hit a bump, your drink splashes everywhere.

While I can't agree with you on the rear ones, the 99-02 cupholders between the center console are the best.

One of my next projects is to retrofit a 99 cupholder and center arm rest console into my 98. I purchased the cupholder part and now I am waiting for the center console from Rony up in Canada.

I'll have to reposition/offset the parking brake. I don't think that will be too difficult but one never knows until embarking on the task.

Clin:

I have no idea. I didn't think about it. I'm really not sure if there is anything useful to do with it except ignore it ever existed. I know for the first two weeks i used it as a cell phone holder, but since i put my Pro-fit in, I don't use it for that.

Any ideas?

Also, are you going to do the same mod? The cost is about $45 for the black cupholder part and about $135 (from partznet.com) for the center console. I answered Rony's part-out thread and i bought the CC for $80 with shipping from him. Don't worry, I'll take pics and a write up.

Whatever the cost, it'll be worth it. Did I mention I HATE the 98 cupholder?!?!

Maybe remove the old cupholder and put in a 1/2 DIN Eq there? it won't be wide enough though, so you'd have to cut a little more out.

I was looking into this mod as well. What are you going to do about the rear window and ECT switches? Those switches are on the center dash on the newer 4Runners.

yea bob, you dont have to tell me about hating the cup holder...i saw it and was like..WTF is toyota thinking puttin it up there...that's the absolute worst place..first, it's just ugly, 2nd it blocks the air and 3rd your drink spills out!!!!! yea, the cost doesn't seem too bad...would be great if you do a write up with pics and put the part number and where they can be obtained from on it...but i have been wanting to do something about it because sometimes i hear it rattle when i hit bumps...you think you can take out the cup holder and mod it for another purpose?? or just a blank hole???? i wonder if toyota has a cover type thing for it so it looks like it's part of the dash??? i would rather it not be this hole in the dash...or i may just take out the part that flops down when you pull it out and just use the tray type thing...so what if it says CUP HOLDER!!!!!! i'm looking forward to your write up...wish we lived closer so we could do the mods together...and it's getting cold here!!!!!!!!!!! thanks alot bob!!!

Dub,

I'll find a place for those two switches. Actually since I have a 5 speed, I don't have the ECT switch so that's one less switch to reposition.

I imagine I'll probably dremel a nice little hole in the 99 center console and mount it onto there. If not, I'll find a place on the dash panel in one of the existing cut outs. I already repositioned the RS3000 LED to the front dash on the left side of the steering column. That was pretty easy and I wondered why they didn't install it there in the first place?

The cupholder is pretty thin. I don't really think you can do much with it.

Clin: I think it would not be worth the cost or the time to even do anything with it. Maybe you could find a thin "Type R" or "TuRD" sticker and stick it over the "Cupholder" writing? That alone would give you an extra 5 RWHP!

Oh speaking of Type R, I saw this 2000 4runner yesterday with chromed out wheel arch moldings with a big Nissan "TypeR" badge right below the 4runner badge. I thought maybe El Latino was down in my neck of the woods w/ a new 4runner.

I'm confused. Do you mean to say that THESE kick ass?

They don't adjust and are to small to hold a 1 Liter water bottle. They're not bad, but I would say they're great either. What was the deal with the old ones(never seen them)? They were mounted in the dash???

Yeah, those front cupholders are a PITA! I've actually started using the BACK cupholders when I'm on the road and they work fairly decent even though I have to twist a little to get to them.

I think that extra 5hp from the CUPHOLDER MOD would be great though!!

I got so many cupholders I don't know what to do with them. The ones in my dash are good for cans but they suck for bottles, they won't fit. I got some ones that go in the vent and are chrome skulls I use them for cell phone holders and stuff and then I bought a middle little console with a locking cupholders and I can fit HUGE cups in there. I love it.

ERC, et al:

Here's a pic of the dreaded 96-98 front cupholder:

As you can see, this assinine design accomplishes the following:

1) Seriously hinders your ability to manipulate the HVAC controls
2) Blocks the air vents. Some say it keeps cold drinks cold, but...
3) Bounces up and down with a full drink and spills all over your floor, center console, your lap (on a good pothole), etc. Though lidded drinks like the one above tend not to leak, an open capped lid like a Starbuck's coffee lid will splash with no hesitation.

So when my 99 center console comes in from Rony in Canada, you bet your a$$ I'm gonna do this mod ASAP!

Hey we 2nd generation owners have the same problem with the cupholder postion and size. At least you early third generations can switch out consoles. I don't know what to do since our parking break isn't on the floor. Anyone thought of any good ideas?

What's the status?

Hey Bob, what's the status of this mod? I'm looking at adding to the stable with a 97 or 98 and want to do this mod immediately. Is it going to work without alot of headaches?

runninclean - I thought about converting the crumb catching recess into a single cupholder, but haven't found a unit I can retrofit yet.

The correct part is still on its way. Am I going to finish it? Is there an Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, a Ginch who Stole Christmas?!?!

Hopefully it'll come in on Monday and I can start on it right away.

Keep us posted

Bob,

Thanks and keep us posted. My 2nd Gen cupholder did the same thing to me that the pre 99 cupholders do. I dropped off a curb (don't ask) and coffee shot out of my cup like old faithful - drenching my leg and console with hot coffee. Plus, I have already broken one, so I'm on my second one. What a POS.
