Guys,

Very odd sound coming from the engine bay somewhere. I was waiting in the drive thru, put the 5-speed in neutral, and let my food completely off the clutch. And then i hear this sound that can be best described as "crickets". I barely put any pressure on the clutch and the cricket sound is gone.

Any clue?

That's the exact same thing my dad's 96 5-speed does. He bought his new and its been doing that since 65,000 miles, he now has 120,000 miles and it runs fine.

I think its caused by the throwout bearing. I wouldn't get it done until you need a new clutch.

Its an annoying sound, but with your sound insulation project done, just roll up your windows.

 

My 96 makes a quiet "turbine" type sound. When the clutch is depressed, it goes away.

Try spraying some Orkin in there and let me know if it goes away.

 

yes, that usually attracts crickets.

thanks for the advice re throwout bearing and pesticides.

where can i buy some cricket pesticide? will it hurt my MAF in the process if i spray too much? WILL IT INCREASE HORSEPOWER?!!!?

if it's any consulation bobby, my toss off bearing has been cricketing for about a year now and the clutch is still strong. it's the original stock one. I used to squirt white lithium grease in the inspection hole where the fork comes out but I got tired of doing that every couple months so I just live with it. I figure when I replace the clutch that will get fixed but it's not worth tearing it down since the clutch is still real strong. it won't hurt anything.

when I get home tonight I'll post a pic of it. you shouldn't miss it though. it's hole in the bell housing that the clutch fork goes through, the slave cylinder pressed on the fork on the outside and it pivots and disengages the clutch. there is a rubber cover that covers the gap betweent the bell housing and the back of the clutch fork. you pull this out and slide it out the fork and little and you can use the red straw to aim the white lithium grease spray at the center where the bearing sits. just make sure you use electrical tape to secure the red straw to the can so it doesn't shoot off into the bell housing. that happened to me but I figure it either melted away or it just got pinched and ground up. I guess I'll find out if I ever have to replace the clutch. haha.

 

You could have a broken spring in the pressure plate?
