Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a Gen II 4runner, but im a little short on legroom. Does anybody know if it is at all possible to move the seat back on the mounts? Has anyone remedied this problem in some way? Thanks again

 

It should have plenty of room, unless you are over 9 feet high.


It is hard mounted, but some welding can take care of that or better yet buy a Master craft or similar racing seat.

 

I'm 6'1 and it is a little tight driving for long periods - even with the seat all the way back. The 3G models have more front and rear legroom than the 2G. Moving the mounts is likely the way to go.

 

yeah im 6'1/6'2 and i wished the seat would go back a little bit more, but meh.

 

I'm 6' and wish the seat went back further as well...best solution I've found is to reduce the padding on the caboose. Just means ya have to spend more time outa the seat than in it.

 

I'm 6'4" and really feel cramped in the 4R, I've done this on two Toyotas and am about to do it on this one too. IT's easy, look at your mounts on the slide rails. Grind off the big "rivets" that hold the floor brackets to the rails. Cut pieces of 1/4"x1" flat bar about 2" or so too long, and drill 4 holes, 2 in each end spaced the same. Bolt the floor brackets to the forward two holes and the sliders to the rear two holes, instant 2" setback. Search around for thr right bolts so the heads don't interfere, I used stainless machine screws (for the strength,) seems like they were 1/4", with flat heads the last time and it worked great.

 

i am 5'5 1/2 and I have so much legroom that I have to scoot my seat all the way up just to reach the pedals. so nah!

 

How far back can I safely move the seat mounts do you think? I want another 4-6" maybe. I just dont think 2" will be enough. Im about 6'3" by the way.

 

I'm kind of surprised to hear this from so many folks. I'm about 6'1" and have no complaints. Probably a silly suggestion, but maybe tilting the steering wheel up a notch or two would help? With my heaviest hiking boots I have to do this to keep from stradling the steering wheel too much.

On a side note, my wife's mini is the first car I've ever sat in that I didn't have the seat all the way back. That thing has so much leg room it's crazy.

 

I like to move the seat back in my runner but noticed with the back seat folded flat theres not a lot of extra room.Maybe an inch?

 

I think its all how you like to drive. I'm 6' tall and my seat could be pushed back 2-3 more inches.

 

I'm about 6' or 6'1" and I don't have any problems...and I have mine all the way back, the only space that is cramped is the back seats, but I dont have to worry about that.

I had a Stealth and never had to put the seat all the way back, and in my F150 I don't either (except occasionally on long trips) which was a surprize. Of course part of it is what you're used to - when I drive the wife's SVT Focus I feel downright cramped and claustrophobic, but after a bit the feeling goes away and it's quite comfy (although I really could use a bit more leg room.) Then when I get back in my truck it feels huge!

Christyle, I can't imagine how you could use that much, you still need to be able to push the clutch all the way down, and reaching the wheel gets uncomfortable if you go so far back. Nevertheless, you can have as much as you want, just make the sure your extension bracket is strong enough. I'd use angle rather than flat bar if I wanted to go that far, it's much stronger.

 

Im not sure how these guys at around 6' can feel comfortable in a 4runner, it seems way to cramped for me. As it is, i will have trouble pushing the clutch in because my knees are sticking up at such a huge angle. I must be some kind of freak with long legs for a 6'3" guy. I think if I move the seat back like, 4" it will be at about the same distance as the ranger I have, which is a perfect distance away. I sat in a gen 3 and it has WAY more room, its just right.

 

Yeah I prefer the legroom in a 3rd gen, but I prefer my 2nd overall... I'm 6'4", I might have to move the seat back or something and screw anyone behind me...

 

I just measured mine and my wifes Runners. The 3rd gen has only 1" more legroom than the 2nd gen, but the 2nd gen is 2" wider in legroom than the 3rd gen.

 

What type of bucket seats would give the most leg room compared to the stock bench.

 

i sat in a 2001 4runner and a 93 i think. There might have been something wrong with the seats on the 93. Who knows. I thought the 01 had TOOOONS more room, i could actually extend my legs in it.

 

It feels way bigger than that, I can nearly stretch my legs all the way out in a 3rd gen, but my 2nd gen I'm up on either side of the steering wheel practically.

 

It must be the pedals are in a different spot. I measured from the edge of the seat to the firewall, and then door to the hump in the middle at the same height. One reason I know the foot area is bigger in the 2nd gen is I have the old OEM floormats from my wifes Runner down. There is a gap of about 2" on the width and the length doesn't go all the way up the firewall. This is why I originally measured these dimensions long ago. I was surprised the 3rd gen's carpet was much smaller than the 2nd gen's.
