I was referred here by someone on 4runnerforum.com,has anyone here ever converted a 2wd to a 4wd,any help would be appreciated.

 

I have never heard of anyone asking that question. But I can say this, there are people who have asked if they can change their Celica to all-wheel drive. It is possible but very very hard. I know for the toyota all-tracs (corolla, camry and celica) they have different floor boards and the fuel tank is in a different location. You would need to find a doner Previa to convert all the parts over, but if you go through that much work you are better off selling the Previa you have now and get a All-Trac Previa. My $0.02

 

I'd like a low range though from like a landcruiser,taco,or 4runner

 

Sell it and get a Landcruise, taco, or 4Runner.

it's an automatic and it's two wheel drive,don't know much else about it

 

not to sound rude but you got some learnin to do before takin on that kind of a project. i've restored cars from the ground up and i wouldnt attempt that. mostly cause you can go buy one with AWD just so you dont have to go through this. :pat:

If you want help, you have to help us help you. What is the transmission code? Look at the sticker in the door jamb.

I'd say if you can't muster that info then you won't be doing the job yourself. That being the case, I'd guess converting to 4WD with a low range transfer case will run you well over the value of the vehicle. Don't bother.

I see an All Trac Previa in your sig. What's wrong with that one?

Nope, if you want a 4x4 offroad caplable Previa (and I think it would be cool too!) then you need everything, the entire drive train.

Everything. The entire drive train. And a chassis.

There is a simple (relatively) solution. Find a donor 4x4 pickup, probably an Xtra Cab long bed. Use the entire frame, lengthened or shortened to match the wheelbase of the Previa. The Previa has no frame – there is nothing sturdy enough to attach the front end to, or attach motor mounts and trans crossmembers too for that matter. You’ll need to lose the mid-engine layout, so you’d have to cut up the floorpan to get a transmission hump. Etc. It could be done, but I can assure you that from the basic questions you asked it’s probably not something you’re really gonna do. Every single step will be custom, from body mounts to suspension to connecting up steering and brakes,and wiring etc… and you need to know what you’re doing up front to be able to make it all work, especially if you want something safe, driveable, and cool when you’re done.

 

And don't forget the 1980-83 Starlet.......

couldn't you lean a 1fz-fe,modify the intake like the 2tz's,and shorten the driveshaft's from a wrecked landcruiser?
