I have tried fiberglass, stainless whip, and the ultra-cool K40 superflex. IMO, the K40 wins hands down.
The fiberglass/spring combo sort of reminds me of a nun with a yard stick... WHACK, WHACK!!
IMO, ridgid fiberglass antennas are perfect for highway rigs, because they don't flex much, but I don't think they are really intended to be used with a spring. I imagine you added the spring because it is hitting stuff when you go off-roading. I think the solution would be to go with a different antenna for off-road use (like the K40 super flex). I have mine mounted on the hood, and it does just fine on the highway, but flexes for anything off-road.
