From 1984-1987 The hilux/4runner came with 2.4 carb, 2.4EFI & up to 1986 2.4EFI turbo, in 1987 they droped the turbo and added the 3.0 v6. A 2.0 diesel was available in 1984 and in canada 1984 &1985. I'm not sure if the diesel was available in cali at all (Carb rules). on third tacomas the 2.4EFI was available in the first years on the 2wd only the runners and 4wds got a 2.7 or 3.0 (the 2.7 is just a bored out 2.4 with the block mounted backwards to send the tailpipe down the right side of the vehicle and allow the tank to be on the left. in later years came the 3.4 et al aviator.
note in the 2gen hilux the 2wd had a 2.0 gas I4 engine as base.
