cold air intake
i have an 84 toyota pickup with a 2.4 efi 22re motor and i want cold air intake but cant find one does anyone know of one i can buy or know a way i can make one.

There are a few things you can do. K&N makes a cone filter intake which costs a lot of money $200-$300, considering it is just a filter and a piece of metal to mount the filter onto the sensor. Try looking on e-bay and sometimes you can find the same set-up as K&N. Use the metal mounting assembly and buy a better filter. This will ussually cost $75-$150. I am not 100% sure how your setup is but many of the 22re's have the intake running over the radiator heating the air. You can switch the battery with the air intake so you have only a few inches to the intake manifold from the sensor instead of a few feet.

Personally, I would get an adapter for the MAF. It will bolt up via the 4 screws. Then, I would run piping into the fender where I would have a cone K&N filter with the largest possible surface area. I did this on our Accord, and I gained just as much HP as my friend with a $230 intake. I saved $185.

On gadgets site didn't he try one of those k&n kits or something and it turn out no better than just an amsoil filter? Perhaps I should check.

They don't help out to much. The only reason I did it was to move the intake to the other side where it did add power.

On the 4Runner, the K&N "sucked" (no pun intended). What I am talking about is a MAFS adapter, yes. From there, you relocate the actual intake of the air to a fender. Yes, you greatly increase the chance of water injestion and possible exposure to greater amounts of particulates. However, as far as bang for your buck, a cold air intake cant be beat. I assume you do most if not all of your driving on the street. Otherwise I would reconsider my idea. I will admit, on a lot of engines K&N cone set ups work really well. Why people spend $200+ I have no idea. You can easilly make an intake that is just as effective.

on the downeyoff-road site the only one near my truck is the one for a efi engine but its for 85 to 87 would that fit or no

You are asking if a 22RE adapter will fit on a 22R? I would say no. You are carbed right?

no my engine is efi and the downey is a cold air intake for efi engines but its for 85 to 87 i want to know if it will still fit on a 84

Call downey and see what they say. There could be differences that would make fitment impossible.

Check with downey but I think the only difference was in the design of the valve cover on the engine. I don't recall any other differences on my old truck and friends older trucks eighties hiluxes. aviator

As long as the air sensors were the same you will be OK. If you have access to any fab. equipment you can always make one. All they are is a flat square piece of metal with holes for bolts on each corner, with a round metal 3", I believe, piece that comes out. 30- 1 hr. project with the right equipment.

now im not sure but i dont think your truck came factory with efi. 1985 and later trucks only came with efi, that is why downey says 1985-1987. you can write down your VIN number and check what engine it came with to be sure. www.4x4wire.com has a section under FAQ that explain the VIN number. or you can write down your engine number (im not sure where its at) and bring it to a dealer and ask them what year your engine is.
