I want to replace the clutch pedal spring in my 98.
The clutch squeaks and also the pedal doesn't come up all the way each time and I have to pull up the pedal manually in order for cruise control to engage.


I was wondering if you guys have a part # or a specific spring I should purchase to change this out with?

These is a thread someplace on here for it.

I used the spring off my 87 parts truck the brake return spring.

Works great . Might be almost 2 years and the spring shows no sign of being over stretched.

This was not one of Toyota`s better ideas

 

I had the same issue until today. Took less than an hour to fix. As stated in previous threads...just pry out the torsion spring and get rid of it altogether. #70 spring will attach from your clutch pedal (where the cotter pin is) to a welded bracket up above exactly like you're brake pedal. I took the plastic off below the steering wheel to make it easier. Made a world of difference. Also you can adjust that pin switch for your cruise control to make better contact

 

okay I will try to find the previous threads and look for a # 70 spring.


I don't want to stiffen the clutch pedal for daily driving but want it to pop all the way up for cruise to work normally.

 

It will not stiffen your pedal. All that spring does is pull it up the extra 1/2" that your master cylinder doesn't do. More than likely...one or more of your cheap plastic bushings in your torsion spring is broke and that's what's causing the issue. Junk the torsion spring and buy yourself a #70 spring at true value or get a brake pedal return spring from Toyota... Same thing.

 

so buying a new spring from Toyota wont solve the issue? I purchased one but have not yet tried to install it. Is there any way to replace the plastic bushings and fix it that way or no? I have yet to take a look at it and would like to have the correct parts when I start thanks.

 

If it is a brake return spring, it will work. I had my master and slave cylinder both replaced and the pedal was still not coming completely back. It squeaked and the pedal rattled going down the road. I ripped out the torsion spring and the bushings came out in pieces which was the issue. Replaced with a return spring and its peace and quiet....and now extends all the way back.

 

It is not the huge big spring that will last forever it is the cheap plastic bushings that fail.

I am sure you can replace those bushing and have a few months to a year before you need to replace them again.

You could have some bronze bushings machined but me being cheap I went with a free spring off my parts truck.

At 205,xxx I replaced both the stupid mega spring, stupid stinking bushings and the clutch pedal too, because both had a lot of wear:

okay I gotcha now, I need to return the clutch spring and get a break return spring or 70 spring from true value. thanks guys
I can say that in 10 manual cars Ive had Ive never had this happen but at least its cheap to fix!
