Ok, so I’m trying to figure out what is squeaking / squealing in my clutch? It’s like a high pitched little chirp, chirp, chirp, chirp… coming from it that is driving me NUTS! in N with the clutch out it just squeaks as it turns... Pilot bearing? squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak, as it sits there and Idles. It sounds like a hamster running in one of those rickety old wheels… with no oil! If I just barely rest my foot against the clutch pedal, it goes away with only about a 1/4 inch of pedal movement, if that. I can just rest my root against it and the squeak goes away. Drives me nuts!

Any Ideas what it is? I figure since I will be there, might as well put in a new clutch plate and turn the flywheel, cuz she has 150,000 miles. Will check the rear seal & do a new throw out bearing too. Anything else I should do while I'm there?

That's your throw out bearing.

wrench is right. i recall someone posting a fix to this by spraying in a little hole that can lubricate the TO. search and ye might find.

I'm getting geared up for the Clutch replacement my self.

Disc, TO brg, pilot brg, pressure plate.. yeehaw nothing like looking like a coal miner with all the black goo smeared all over me.

But with 124K on the clock it's time. I'm going to address that funky clutch pedal return spring at the same time.

Thanks guys. I was thinking, "since it has 150,000 on it, and is squeaking, I might as well just do a clutch job"… but the clutch seems to be going strong, so now I'm like... Hmmmmmm? If I could just get that DAMN squeak to stop, I'd run the clutch till it wouldn't run no-mo! But I've searched and read that some say the bearing is sealed and NOT to spray any kind of lube into the bell housing or you might ruin what is left of the clutch. Others say, NO, you can lube the bearing and quiet it down for 10,000 plus miles or so... And I’m not too terribly concerned about “ruining the clutch” as it will need replacing sometime soon regardless. Does anyone have a definitive on this or has anyone done it? It seems like a common squeak has anyone been successful lubing it into silence?

Sound's like the Throwout bearing is out of grease.

Spraying wd-40 or some other lubricant on it will only help wash away any remaining grease in it, causing it to go south in a hurry.

As for ruining the clutch disc, I don't think so, it would burn off very quickly.

Ok, so I got up into that boot and was able to launch some Lithium spray in there... No more hamster or "crickets". All gone, hopefully for a while? but it was easy to do, so no big if i have to do it every oil change...

I'd just like to say that on my 1990 4Runner, the clutch was really really hard for me and my dad to do, since we didn't have all the right tools. The transmisson on this is one of the biggest I have ever seen! We ended up getting both driveshafts off, and get the tranny about 2 inches apart, until we both thought that continuing forward was a bad idea. So we sent it to a shop, and it was done. O yea I forgot, I think I had 203K miles on it when it was replaced, and it was the original clutch too. Anyways good luck with the squeak sound, hope you fix it.

so all you had to do was pry the boot off, point the little shooter tube giz-wah at the t/o bearing and you're good?
