Hey Everybody

I finally got fed up with my clock not working, so today i decided to put in the external temp mod that has been very popular with the 4runners.

i didn't take any pic's during the process. but i did do a few things different then the original post described.

instead of modding the dash panel, i used the entire clock housing that snap in and out to hold my temp display,
i even used the existing power connector and plug so removal is easy if i do decide to go back to the clock.

the overall finished look is great and the green color matches the rest of the lights.
I also had to solder a longer seņor wire to get the sensor in the place i wanted it.



if anybody does need any "how to" or instruction of what i did, i can snap a few pic's of the project.

 

That's awesome! I can't tell you how lame it is to have a spot on the dashboard that says HR MIN :00 but doesn't do squat!! Nice job!!

 

Any additional pictures, part numbers, links, etc. would be great. My clock needs a "light" tap about daily to keep working. I'm guessing it will stop one of these days.

 

Please post up a detailed how to. Can the display be set to farenheit?

 

thanks everybody, i really enjoy this mod.. this temp display unit will only show Celsius, you would just had to order the Fahrenheit one .

where did you put the sensor?

 

i'm kinda playing around with spots, but i've had the sensor in the wheelwell, the front fender, under the running boards. in those places it picked up a lot og heat from the engine. right now i have it zip tied to the horn which is in front of the rad, see how it goes tomorrow.

 

So how did it go?

 

i moved the sensor a couple more times. i'm getting the best readings and most accurate when the sensor is placed in front of the rad. i have mine mounted to the horn assembly

 

Alrighty here comes my first "how to write up" so excuse me if it's not the best

first you wanna take off the four climate control knobs and pop off the plastic climate control display plate off.
the knobs just pull off and you might need a small flat head screw driver to help you pull off the plate. pull the plate off as evenly as possible as the AC button has a long button/sensor assembly as pictured in the two pics below




second unscrew two phillips screws that hold the entire console into place.
one screw on the top left and another on the bottom right side.




and from there all you need to do is gently and strongly pull the top of the console towards you.
you will notice a few wires you may want to unplug to give you more room with the console.
i unplugged them all





this leaves you with access to the clock which we want to remove.
to remove the clock it's held in by four plastic clips, gently pull and push the clock free

from there the clock is free from the console and you can now take the internals of the clock out. to do that there are again four plastic clips the hold it all together. gently pry and separate the parts



the clock internals pretty much all fall out once have it apart...
i cut out a hole in the clock display large enough to fit the temp display.
i used a exacto knife to trace the outline and a dremel tool to cut out the hole.
i also had to round off the corners of my temp display to fit the way i wanted it.
i dont have any pics of this step sorry..

i also cut a small hole to fit the sensor wires and cutout the power plug to make soldering easier.




to supply power to the temp unit, i used the connections that said "acc +" for my positive and "e -" for my negative.
again sorry i have no pics of this..
after that your all done.
the unit that i purchased came with a very short sensor wire, i soldered a long 3 meter wire so i could run it to the front of the 4runner

reverse all your take apart steps to reassemble it all. and your done
have a beer or three and call er a day

i hope this help everybody who want to do this mod. i highly recommend it and it takes almost no time to do.. took myself about an hour. but i also had to run to the fridge for a beer twice.
