Clarification on Factory Window Tint????

Ok, I want to tint my windows. I have checked out a few places locally. One says I can't put tint over factory tinted windows, the 2nd one says you can but it looks bad, and the third says you can cover factory tint and it looks good. Any clarification would be great. Has anyone covered factory tint?
Thanks

I'd like to know too! this seems to be some kind of urban legend because I have spoken to 6 different window tinter's and got 6 different answers The most similar things seems to be that the tint wont match unless a mirror finish bronze color tint is used.....although other people tell me that 20% or darker will all but mask the factory tint.

I sure wish the hell I knew because I want to tint the windows, properly.

The only thing that was agreed on was that the factory tint on the cargo windows can not be removed as it is "in the glass" and not a film that can be removed.

Isn't factory tint IN the glass? The glass is bronze in color on the rear seating area of ext cabs, and the rear windows back on 4-Runners. I tinted the windows in the Tacoma I used to have, and it looked fine. The rear windows are just slightly darker than the fronts if using the same percentage on all windows.

I thought the same thing, Since it doesn't chip like aftermarket tint does.

Brad,
What tint shops did you go to?

I recommend:
Tint Specialists
4800 S 150 West #40
UT
(801) 261-3232

I had them tint my 94 Ranger, and the tint still looked good 5 years later when I sold it. They have also tinted my old 00 Civic Si, and my brothers 03 IS300.

Its funny that you should be getting different answers at different shops. You should be able to put tint on the factory tint as many people here have done so. I believe the factory tints are smoked on the glass. Thats why it wont turn purple or peel. Either way I think I've seen people put on a layer of dark tint with a layer of mirror tint so it should be no problem putting it over the factory tint.
