Chunks of metal in bottom of oil pan
Does anyone know what chunks of metal in the oil when you change it is? I've heard a bad connecting rod bearing, not sure though. Anyways, I think my car has a rod knock and I've seen metal chunks in the oil the last two oil changes. Well, it's a rebuilt engine, supposedly, so I've only changed the oil twice. 86 4Runner dlx stock 207000 miles 3100 on junk rebuilt

chunks of metal in bottom of oil pan
If I drain the oil into a bucket or whatever then dump it into something else there's all kinds of little metal chunks left in whatever I put the oil into. The engine also knocks or slaps pretty bad when I start it sometimes and it runs hot. I've got a new radiator, dual stage thermostat and water pump. I think the shop that installed my engine pulled a fast one on me. The knocking is especially bad after an oil change on the initial start up. 86 4Runner dlx 20700 miles 3100 on rebuilt, or is it?

Sound just like a rod bearing to me but i am no expert. Just had mine go last summer and i am putting in a reman now. You might want to take it to another mechanic and see what he says before returning to the one who "rebuilt" it. My mechanic had me start it and told me it was a rod bearing. It was a distinctive rapping sound.
Good luck,
Jason

bad rod bearing
I went to one mechanic in the town I live in and he told me that it was a rod bearing just from hearing what I described to him. I've already talked to the shop that claims to have rebuilt it and I'm basically going to keep going back there until they get it right. Either way if it is a rod bearing there's no way it was rebuilt. I think what they did was just slap a new oil pan on it and a few seals and call it rebuilt. They claimed that the pistons were bored over but it doesn't seem to drive like it to me. 86 4Runner DLX bone stock 207,000 miles

rebuilt 22re
I'm gonna try to make them build a new motor, they're really not very helpful at all. In hindsight I probably should have spent a little more money and bought an engine from a reputable company. I spent 2100 bucks for the engine a clutch kit a water pump and they installed it too. I'll let you know next week, I'm taking it back on Tuesday.
