what does a totally rebuilt engine consist of?
I just purchased a supposedly rebuilt 22re about a month ago and after driving it for a while I've come to realize that not only was it not rebuilt, I think it has a bad connecting rod bearing or maybe even a rod knock. I was told when I bought it that it was a totally new rebuilt engine so, my question is what should a totally new rebuilt 22re have in it? I would like to know as much as I can because I'm taking it back on Tuesday and they are really hard to deal with and they're denying everything so I just want to be educated. Wish me luck 86 4Runner dlx bone stock 207000 miles

TOTALLY rebuilt should include:
SHORTBLOCK
Hot tank of the block (usually magnafluxed as well)
Crank journals/main caps resized
Crank bearing surfaces (main and rod) checked for spec and turned down if needed
New bearings (rod, main and cam<if applicable>)
Rod journals/caps resized (at a minimum. Most will magnaflux as well)
A fresh hone on the cylinder (bored out if the bores are out-of-spec for 'round')
New pistons (if overbored)
New rings
New wristpins
Reciprocating assy. balanced
New oil pump/pickup
New timingchain (if applicable)
New cam (if applicable)
New water pump (if applicable)
Surface (deck) the block (if needed)
Assembled with new bolts (or studs)
LONGBLOCK
All of the above plus:
Hot tank/Magnaflux
Surface the head (if needed)
New valves (minimum 3 angle cut on the seating surfaces)
New valve guides (if needed)
New springs
New retainers/keepers (if needed)
New valve stem seals (some call 'em oil seals)
Head(s) assembled to block with new head bolts (or studs)
There's probbably a couple items I missed.. but that shoudl give you a fair idea of whats involved in a 'total rebuild'.

total rebuild
Thanks alot for that info. The place where I bought and had my engine installed claimed that it was totally rebuilt by their machine shop so I'm going to ask him to go to the machine shop with me and pay for whatever needs to be rebuilt, I'm assuming it's going to be pretty much everything. I've talked to them on the phone a few times and theyre already trying to weasel their way out it so this should be interesting. 86 4Runner bone stock 207,000 miles will run good soon I swear.

Rebuilt 22re
I bought it from Toyota 4x4 and Truck Dismantlers in San Jose California. That was probabaly my first mistake right there. Overall I paid 2100 bucks for a rebuilt 22re, clutch kit, water pump and insatallation.

Well, it sounds like a reasonable price... if the engine would have been worthwhile.
fwiw, I just hooked up a deal with Orient Engine for a 3VZE at $1799. That includes shipping from them to me, and return shipping for the old core. Installation is being done locally for a reasonable amount (I'd rather not requote his prices).
Good luck getting this cleared up.
