This afternoon I was headed to pick up a lady friend of mine. As I entered the interstate entrance ramp I gave it gas to meet interstate speeds. I looked down for the speed and noticed that my check engine light, VCS OFF and VCS TRAC lights had all come on. I checked the transmission fluid to see if it was something with that. The fluid is at a good level and good color. Let my car cool down to see if it needed to "reset" the codes. Nothing...Does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be? Has this happened to anyone before?

Once there is a fault in any of the engine sensors, all 3 lights will come on because there is an engine fault, and the transmission computer sees the engine fault, and goes into limp mode as well.

Go get the fault code(s) in your vehicle read using any scan tool at any automotive repair shop.

My guess is you're going to see a P0171 which is one of the more popular codes.

Tighten the gas cap.

 

Tried tightening the gas cap to no avail
Went to autozone. They diagnosed a PO171 code-running lean
Tomorrow I will take it to the stealership to see what they suggest. I will update with the remedy

 

dude jus have them reset the code and thats all u have to do unless it happens again or ur gettin horible gas mileage it has happened to me twice first time it was an oxyge sensor, then the next were jus a fluke in the trans shiftin and the throtil body

 

I suggest you purchase a mass airflow meter and install it yourself, then disconnect the battery to cancel the code, then 'wheel off into the sunset.

A new mass flow meter is around $200 from Toyota.

If you have a K&N air filter, purchase a new Toyota air filter while you're there. It's $20 and will help reduce the failure rate of the MAF.

 

You don't recommend just trying to clean the MAF before dropping $200 on a new one? If it were me, I'd at least try so I could feel better about spending that kind of cash!

 

Well I went ahead and had a new MAF installed as well as a timing belt and water pump. They recommended I changed my transmission fluid and spark plugs as well. But now its back and running smooth as ever

 

Nope. BTDT, got the t-shirt. Light comes back in a few weeks

I've changed a lot of these things.
