Check Engine light @ 75k miles

Does the check engine light automatically come on @ 75k miles? Does it do this to get you to take it to the dealership to get the 75k maintenance?

I found the list of codes to run the self diagnostic, that's my next step.

Everything seems to be running smoothly.

thanks

No, it is telling you something is wrong. The check engine light means you should get the engine control system checked and repaired.

I see that you have an Amsoil air filter. $10 says that your MAF needs cleaning. It's pretty simple. You'll find writeups in the Tech section for the 3rd gens.

That makes sense. I think I've had the AMSOIL filter in for a while and its due for a cleaning.

thanks

o2 sensors need to be replaced most likely, don't go to the dealer they'll rape you, I just did mine a few months ago when my toy hit the 100k, it was the 02 sensor.

It could be something as simple as your gas cap gasket, an o2 sensor, your cat. conveter pluggin' up, the the big vac. line into the air box isn't connected or is pinched, ect. ect. ect.

Gadget is right. You should get it checked.

You sure your code is the cat and not the o2 sensor?

Your cat is flanged so it's just a simple unbolt and bolt replacment. Why's that goina be a pain?

Convertors don't get clogged with "stuff" so to speak, when they are "clogged" it usually means the ceramic material has broken apart or in cases of running high exhaust gas temps then the material can actually be melted. Replacements are usually under $100.

I'd bet money you're right.

Only way to know for sure is to pull the actual code number and post it when you get it.

After work I stopped by Autozone to get the diagnostic run. They do it for free. I was a little pressed for time, it only took 5 minutes.

The code that came up was P0120 which is the Throttle Position Sensor/Switch. A circuit malfunction from what the guy told me.

What does this mean?

Is this something that can create a domino affect to other parts?

They have the part for $79.99. Where does this thing go anyways? Besides my ace if it will include lots of labor.

But the weird thing was that the check engine light turned off when I left the parking lot. Did it do that because the diagnostic was run?

Thoughts?

That is a pretty rare code for the 4runner but yes, that does indicate a bad TPS (I would get it from the dealer instead tho).
See the link to all the codes here:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...ighlight=P0120

No, you shouldn't see any domino effect except maybe bad gas mileage.

It goes right on the top of the engine, very easy to get to and replace.
You can see it (black part) attached to the left of the throttle body in this pic:

Usually when they finish pulling the code they also clear it so if the part is still bad you will see the CEL come back on to signal that the problem has not been fixed and if you pulled it again you would see the same code again.

Did you end up purchasing this part from the dealership? I was curious what one of these cost...
