Help, problem w/ '02 Tacoma

Just finished the first tank w/ techron at 5k miles. Just noticed yesterday a rattling type sound when applying throttle from approx. 2000-3500 rpm. It's definitely not pinging or detonation and the slight rattle increases at the exact same rate the rpm's rise. Also, with the hood open and revving the engine in neutral the noise doesn't exist, so it only occurs under a vacuum state with the fuel system.

I think it could be an injector. Is this possible since i just used the Techron? Kind of suspicious.

There's no check engine light or noticeable loss of power, haven't had enough time to evaluate the fuel mileage yet, but i think it's gonna be lower due to the rate the gauge is already falling.

Any ideas before i stop by the stealer tomorrow morning?

I've no clue. Maybe someone on the TTORA mailing list can offer assistance? wataco@topica.com

I know that I ran Chevron gas for the first 1.5 years I had my rig. The SC pinging was driving me crazy! I was told that if I switched to Texaco, it would help. I was sceptical but tried it anyway. It did make a difference.

Hopefully it's just something with the fuel. The last fill was with Texaco 89.

I also posted at Tacoma Territory but haven't heard anything yet.

I guess we'll see what happens, just hope it's nothing major.

Something in the back of my mind tells me I read that Techron, being an additive did something to cause pinging. I don't know if it lowerd the octane...I do recall Chevron gas did cause some issues...especially the SC motors.

The Taco stopped making noise this morning, kinda weird.
I didn't do anything different or add any new gas.
Hopefully everything is fine, I'll keep you guys posted.

When I had my '95 it wasn't convenient for me to run Chevron all the time, but anytime it felt poorly I would run a few tanks thru and it would get healthy again. Theat was between injector cleanings, and I never had a pinging problem. I did use 93 in it tho.

Then we got the 2K and again it wasn't convenient to run Chevron, so I followed basically the same procedure as with the '95. Again, no pinging problems.

With the 2K and SC'r I run Chevron primarily and have no pinging problems under any conditions at this time. I have noticed that I get more light SC'r whine at less throttle with chevron than with the other brand I use.

Also a Techron treatment hasn't caused any abnormal operation, but again, I use 93 octane gas.

Yeah, I alway run 92 octane. In fact, at least once a month I run octane boost! Toyota does not think there is anything wrong with it - but the pinging is bad under some conditions. I have learned how to drive it to avoid pings. But with Texaco, it has lessened.

Gene,
I see from your sig that you are running a cat-back and also the deck-plate mod. These kind of mods modify the intake/exhaust characteristics and that is one of the reasons I have hesatated on intake or exhaust mods.

When I was thinking about getting the SC'r I talked to TRD and found out that their SC'r tests were done with stock intake and exhause systems. Since some of the stock 3.4's seem to operate right on the edge of pinging I would really hate to fall off that cliff. If fact my Runner runs better with a slightly dirty air filter than it does with a new one, although there is a slight power edge with the clean filter

I had heard that. But I had the pinging problem about a year before I did the exhaust mods. I thought of that too.
