Check engine light

So..last week driving home from work my check engine light came on, so when i got home i turned it off let it sit for a minute and turned it back on. The light was still on so i went for a drive around the block to see if i noticed anything funny at all, everything was good and the light went off after about 10 minutes. Then this weekend i went away on a trip about 350 miles each way, half way the light came on again so i pulled in at a rest stop to do a quick once over and all seemed good aside from the fact that my oil cap was about 1 turn lose...turned truck back on and the light was gone. Driving back home today the light came on again about halfway through the trip, stopped about 10 minutes later for a bathroom break, drove away light was still on but went off about a minute down the road. I drove a total of around 1000 miles this weekend and the light was on for maybe a total of 15 minutes....should I just forget about it, buy one of the diagnostic handhelds or pay some theifing shop?

Year and what kind of truck? You may have a self diagnostic way to figure out what the code is by using a paper clip and the instructions here: http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/codes/index.html

But my first guess would be an o2 sensor those things set of the CELs like crazy if they aren't good

Seriously, at the very least, take it to autozone for a free reading.

I will say that my CEL acted like that when my pre-cat 02 sensor was on its way out though.

could you use a screw driver or anything of that nature if a paper clip isnt available? also on the 87+ vehicles, is there a pic of what they are talking about??

lol no a screw driver won't work, you'll see what I mean its the little box next to the fuse box, I think it says diagnose or something, look under the cap and it will show what little hole is each.

And someone said get it read by autozone, there isn't a computer reader for this year pickup/4runner it has to be done with the self diagnostic I'm pretty sure, someone else correct me if I'm wrong...

X2 on advance auto or auto zone, using their OBD reader, saves a lot of $$

I didn't know it was a 99 when I posted that, I was under the impression it was an older pickup, OBD didn't start untill the mid 90's I thought, but I've been wrong before lol
