Changed my oil this morning and found this...

I was chainging my oil this morning and it was the first time I had been under my car in awhile; anyways I saw this on the driver's side? Is the CV boot done? The passenger side looked fine...

Here's the driver's side:

I have the diff drop done, they are the spacers from the revtek kit. On a side note the bushings on teh dirver's side look way worse than the passenger side, could this have affected anything?

Driver's(nevermind the spilled oil, oil filter location makes it almost impossible for a clean oil change):

Is the boot split, or is it just leaking from the end. If it's not split you might just have to replace the clamp.

Clean it up well, and see if you can spot the tear in the boot (sometimes, they are quite small.) If it's very tiny (which it looks to be - due to the small amount of grease that's been slung out), you can limp around for a bit with it if you cover the tear with some good duct tape (as long as the joint hasn't lost all its grease), but you'll eventually have to rebuild or replace your axle. A lot of people just replace them with Autozone lifetime warranty CV axles instead of changing the boot, but I prefer to rebuild my OE CV axle, as it is worth a lot more than the core charge you're getting back when you give your perfectly good axle to Autozone in exchange for your aftermarket one.

edit: Good point on the clamp Eric... looking back at it, it does look loose in the pictures (illusion?).

UNR.Grad, grab the clamp and see if you can rotate it. If it's on tightly enough, you should not be able to move it at all.

Thanks for the advice, I went back down and looked at it. I could not find any rips or tears in teh boot. All the grease seems to be coming out from the clamped area. So I tested like you said and yeah I can rotate it. Can I re-tighten this clamp? Or do I need to buy a new clamp? Any advice on what to do now? Does it need more axle grease? Thanks for the help guys.

Did seom searchign and found this thread...

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...=cv+boot+clamp

Seems 4x4fink had a similar problem, and asked all of the questions I could have asked, lol.

4x4fink, did you add more grease, how has your method held up? What did you finally use for the clamps?

Take the clamp off, peel the boot back a little and shoot some grease back into the boot. Then get a small hose clamp (the ones that have a phillips head to tighten them), put it on, tighten it up, and you should be good to go.

The OEM clamps are crappy because you can't adjust them. Just my $.02

Is there specific grease I should use? Should I go to the dealer and get some, or can I just get similar grease from a kragen and put it in there?

Thanks guys!

i had same problem, i cleaned it up real good, however whenever i pushed the boot back to get more grease in, the old grease kept squeezing out, so i figure it had enough.... anyway, i wrapped it with electrical tape and cranked a hoseclamp down on it, used socket instead of phillips for more tightenability

edit: and 6months no more problems except for one clamp (of 4) coming loose for a day or so, before i put it back on, you can always see real easy when its leaking by looking at the frame of the truck between the tire and the body, through the wheelwell, it always seems to show there

You have to use the right stuff... And the inner and outer joints take different types of grease.

(page down)

You can get a "boot repaur kit" from the dealer for about $40. It'll save you a lot of headaches and guess work.

Not to much grease had spung out, so I just redid the clamp with a new hose clamp, with some fabric electric tape between the clamp and boot to protect from friction. Thanks for all the help.
