Hey 98runner210, any luck with the problem? My 99 4Runner is doing the EXACT same thing. Anytime I go over 80MPH it starts to blink and I have the plugs, wires, coils injector cleaner, seafoamed the engine and I am running low on CHEAP fixes. Any wisdom will help!

No I didn't. It is idling like crap and has poor performance now. Scanned it the other day and it had a code for Cylinder 3 Misfire, Cylinder 5 misfire, ransom cylinder misfire, IAT malfunction. My buddy had an extra MAF but it didn't match. I ordered one on eBay but have been waiting for almost 2 weeks for it.

I ordered a MAF on Ebay aswell and it is sitting at the UPS warehouse (I missed the driver on friday) and I will get it tomorrow. I will put it in and see if it makes a difference and I will let you know. I just find it very coincidental (sp?) that we both have the EXACT same problem at the exact same speed in the exact same cylinders (I believe yours started with 2 and 5). I wonder if it's a problem with the fuel rails. 5 being at the end and 2 right before it connects to the banjo bolt. I wonder if gunk just builds up over time... ...I don't know... ...hehe! I got a set of 6 fuel injectors on Ebay aswell but I have not had a chance to change them out... ...too cold (unheated garage and winter). I will let you know how the MAF goes tomorrow.

I am pretty sure that mine is electrical. Sometimes it acts up, sometimes it runs great.

One more thing you might check, if you're using spark plugs that have the little screw-on caps make sure they are screwed on tight.

If you already changed the plugs, wires, coils, etc.....are you using OEM parts? new or used? You aren't using any Bosch or other brand parts besides NGK/Denso I hope.

I must say it still sounds ignition related.....swap the rear coil with another postion and change the #2 and #5 plugs again and see if the problem moves to other cylinders.

Dropped in the new MAF tonight. Still rough idle. Havent had a chnace to get it in the highway but guessing it is going to be the same. Should I disconnect the power to see if it resets anything?

Hey MTL_4runner... ...the swapping of the coils was the first thing that I did. Even after swapping the pack it's still 2 and 5 that show up. That is what is driving me nuts. The coil is the only thing that I can think of that connects the two cylinders and yet it is the same when I swap it out. The only thing that I can think of now is the ECU... ...that is what runs the coil pack... ...right?!? OH... ...and in an attempt to rule out bad equipment I bought all my wires and plugs through Toyota.

If you already swapped it then it may be a broken coil connector or wire.
It's very rare that the ECU goes bad unless it gets wet somehow.

I am thinking a bad ground somewhere that would affect the gas gauge and the way it is running. Or a bad cat. Trading this thing in is really starting to look good. I have been a fan of Toyota but this thing only has 75K miles and I have to invest so much into it every year.

Just a quick reply to one of your previous posts... ...I find on occasion that my fuel consumption goes really bad and I pull off the negative terminal for several minutes and when I plug it back in everythign goes back to normal. You might try doing that... ...don't know how much it would help but it works for me. For me what makes me want to is that it drives well, idels great, fuel consumption is generally perfect... ...only when I hit 80MPH. I am wondering if at 210K I should just stop throwing money at it and just drive a little closer to the speed limit where the problem does not happen?!? To me it's been more of a principal thing that I wanted to fix but it has worn down my drive to fix it. HAHA

mine was the same it only acted up at higher speeds. something is degrading because i now have the rough idle and reduced power. I am looking for a new vehicle. I bought this with 59K miles and i have had to replace: new ball joints, tie rods, axle seals, 2 wheel bearings, alternator, valve cover gaskets, cd player,. I know some of this is minor or maint. but its a Toyota and only has 75K miles! I really like my $Runner and wish I could find the problem.

I find myself a little less fustrated... ...at 209K I have not changed anything but brakes and oil. That is why I love my Toy... ...I am not giving up on her. Have you run Seafoam through your engine? I did 2 treatments and I like the way it runs... ...might be worth a try. Maybe some carbon building up on the valves... ...could account for some of the power loss. (Taking stabs in the dark at this point). Also... ...refresh my memory... ...have you changed out the injectors?

It would be worth it to have your injectors tested and cleaned at that mileage as well. It is possible that it is not ignition related but rather fuel related but usually only on 200K+ mile motors. The odd injectors are fairly easy to access and check with a DMM.

At this point you might also want to bring it into the dealer and have them put it on a scope to eliminate the possibility that the misfire is ignition related. Then you'll solve your issue alot faster and can focus your time and money on what really is causing the issue instead of playing parts replacement. The diagnostic time, while expensive, may save you alot of money in the end.

I have a set of fuel injectors at home that I just need to swap out with the ones in the truck... ...I just need time and as you probably know living in MTL (I am originally from MTL and I miss it!!!) it's a little cold out and my garage is unheated. Do you think that they will be able to diagnose it at the dealer as it only happens on the highway at 120KPH?!?

Yes, because they will hook up a data logger and head for the highway to burn some of the gas in your tank.
Hard to say what it is precisely at this point but just doing parts replacement is expensive too.
