Carb & EFI ??

I thought that in '85, all of the truck engines were fuel injected. My dad just bought an '87 4x4 truck and it is carbureted. The PO told him EFI was an option untill 1988. So, when exactly did carbs go completley away?

84 was the only carbed year in 4runners, 85 and up runners are all fuel injected
85-88 trucks, EFI was an option, and i believe that everything was fuel injected starting in 89, not 100% certain though

Thanks for the info Joe, that seems to be correct. I'm not sure why I was so positive carbs were gone by '85, but oh well, Dad loves his "new" truck carb and all. Nmtoy, that's just plain ole crazy talk, j/k. I wonder when they did away with carbs across all their truck models...hmmmm

2wd had carbs longer than 4wd trucks.

Probably becasue in people are always talking about 85 4Runners as the choice year to have, First year EFI, last year live axle in front.

Performance-wise, your 22R is not going to adapt to high elevations as well as a 22RE to high altitudes. I know you think old-skool is the way to go, and I agree with that-up to a certain point. My 22RE with its Bosch EFI system does much better than my old 22R anywhere I have been. I have gone up to 8000 feet with both. You can't tell me that my EFI system is unreliable, because it isn't.

Not only that, but I've never heard of EFI setups having trouble when going at crazy steep angles, but I have heard of carb setups having trouble with stalling when at certain angles... as you might find in the mountainous regions.

A good, non screwed with Toyota or Suzuki carb (both built by aisin), will run on its side no problem. Only reason to shut it down is because you start to loose oil pressure.

yep, ever heard of an HAC?

i didn't really mean to say "mountainous regions" as much as i did "remote regions". the places i was thinknig of off the top of my head were nepal and a few african countries.

i like fuel injection, but only if it's completely programmable. there's something unsettling to me about not being able to have control over every little thing if i'd like to...

No, what is an HAC?

Yeah, lots of third world countries will have carbs around for a while, but not forever.

You're a control freak! j/k Most EFI isn't programmable, but it does the job better than a carb for most driving situations. I have read about Jeff Moskovitz's 22RTE setup. What he has done sounds very complicated.

this is not true... they will run to a good amount of angle, but only to the point where gravity feed will drop fuel into the bowls.... i was wheeling and sideways on a hill, i had no power, the fuel was basically falling upwards and out of the carb, so the engine wasnt getting any fuel.....
