Can't get started to time it

I'm stuck. I replaced the cam and timing chain. Made sure I had 1 on TDC, marked relation of dist to block, relation of rotor to dist. I go to start and I can't get it to fire. It spins about normal speed and sounds right, like it's building compression, but no fire... like except the huge blow torch backfires through the intake.

I thought maybe I had the cam off 180* so I tried flipping the cap but no better. I'm stumped on what I missed. Oh also I;ve been doing this with TE1 and E1 jumped.

Help!

Did you take the spark plug wires off?You may have them on in the wrong order.I had the same problem, put them on right and it fired right up.

I replaced the plugs and the wires. Wired it up 1-3-2-4 just like the book says. I know it's getting fuel because I've been at this for a while and have pulled the plugs twice to let them dry. Plus the aforementioned blowtorch like backfires.

When I did mine I had the firing order right on the dist but crossed the and had them running 1234 at the plugs.I messed with it for about a day before I realized my bonehead move I had backfiring through the throttle body to.It does sound like something with the timing though.

Okay so I went back to the beginning and who's an idiot....this guy.... I'd figured I'd screw the haynes manual and goto the FSM that nathan buchanan (whoever that is but they are lifesavers) uploaded and see what toyota had to say for itself. Well the firing is 1-3-4-2, so I had that off. Plus I ended up being 1 tooth too advanced on the distributor to cam relation, which would explain the full charge flamethrower effect.

I set it up just like toyota said and she fired on the first try. Just like she always doesand ahem always will.
