Cam Problem....3.0 builders please look!
I ran across this tonight when I was sealing up the end bearing caps. Will this be a balance issue in the cam? If so could I possibly take my cam, shims, and bearing caps out of my old head and put it into the reworked one? I bought these reworked heads off ebay....

i did look thats why i am asking... your pics are very hard to tell if that missing section was purposely machined off for balance issues or if they dropped the cam and it snapped off

>>>*Hi! Got the email on this one. That isn't a chip, it's a chunk. My feelings are that it will shave metal off the head, if it was mine, I would replace it.
*Never saw this before, did that get dropped or something? I can't imagine it running that way....*EB

Jeremy you are going to have to replace it. That will be so out of balance I would be surprised if it ran at all. I'll PM you the FSM on installing the Cam shaft. Shimming is the problem I see at this point. Between the 2 heads you may have enough of the right shims to get it set-up. I am waiting on our Master Tech to get in and I'll show it to him and get his take on it. I would file a claim with UPS for the damage. I hope you insured it. Get back to you in a little while............

cam problem
Reading this post iI just had to post this to give you guys a laugh.
I got a friends yota here with the 3.0 he just bought. Had an oil leak on the front of the motor.
Finally found it to be the right frt. cam seal.
Got it apart and found someone had put a sealer on the rubber seal where it meets the cam. It stuck the seal to the cam good enough that the seal started turning in the head. Now the new seal won't stay in the head as the old one wore the alum. head where the seal sits. I'm trying now to find a seal that will stay in the head.
lol. some of the things ppl do.

What causes that cam damage is pulling the cam bearing caps off with the cam in the wrong position. you need to have the cam in its "at rest" position before taking the caps off. That is what occurs when a valve spring pushes one end of the cam up while the other is still in the bearing. Its common from what the guys told me at "Oregon cam grinder" when I took a used set in to be ground. I ordered a set from "Toyota parts guy" and one of them was broken just like yours. I was able to get 2 good grind-able cores out of the 4 cams I had so all was good.
