Probably going to have to get a 2nd gen for the cash you have to spend. I seem to recall that the 3.0 headgasket can have some problems. Try doing a search and I'm sure you can find what you need.

Welcome to the forum! When you pimp your ride you'll have something unique.

Yeah, the 2nd gens are gong to work better for your budget, but if you can scrap it together definately get a 3rd gen. If you do end up with a 2nd gen (and its a v6 since the 4 bangers didnt have headgasket problems), write down the vin, go to the nearest toyota dealership, and have them check to vin to see if has had the headgasket recall done. If it hasnt, i (personally) would touch it. Other than that, i would wholeheartedly reccomend a manual tranny with either engine. The slushbox is a power robbing SOB. Just my .02. Good luck!

work this summer, beg your parents, rob your girlfriends parents if you have to .. save an extra three grand or so .. and get yourself a 96 with a few extra miles ... otherwise you'll kick yourself for not having made this choice sooner .. then when funds become more available .. then you can work on making it "sexy" and pimping" it .... good luck!

I agree with everything you said except for one thing. If the HG has not been done and it is eligible for the recall, that would be all the more reason to buy it IMO. Not only does the HG campaign enable you to get other work done for basically free labor (timing belt, coolant change, drive belts) it also gives you a piece of mind that it has new gaskets and Toyota will cover their work for 12mo/12K miles.

I bought my 96 and had the HG recall done right away.

buy a first gen (84-88 with EFI and 22RE) for 2000, and put 3000 into it, which will be MUCH more than you will get out of any newer rig. Then spend 2000 on something else.
