Brother's truck is acting up again...
Hey guys, i thought i had fixed it (and it hasn't acted up in over 2 months), but my brother's taco is acting up again. 2001 Taco, 3.4L, auto, 2wd. What is happening is that when it is put into drive (or any forward gear), it immediately stalls out. It will crank back up and idle just fine, and then the next time you put it into drive, it may drive just fine with no issues at all. Then, as you start driving, the temp gauge pegs the red momentarily (3-15 secs, it varies sometimes). The engine is actually not overheating, nor does it run like crap. I have replaced the timing belt/wp, engine coolant temp sensor, tune up, and the problem went away for a few months, now out of the blue it starts acting up again intermittently. Transmission fluid looks good and the level is normal. google and YT search haven't yielded a problem like ours, so i'm hoping SOMEONE has had this problem before, or can at least point me into the right direction to begin troubleshooting. Thanks YT.

My dads 4runner does this 98 Limited Auto 4wd though. He spun out on a rainy day and smoked a curb and after that his transmission has been acting up put in drive and itll stall out, but the temp gauge doesnt peg or anything. Well i scanned it and it has Shift Solenoid E code on it ( forgot the actual code) anyways we went to toyota to check how much it was for one and its around 400+ so we got the hell outta there and are now looking for a used tranny and or solenoids. Dunno if i was helpful lol

Dirty throttle body can cause this...
Dirty/faulty Idle Air control...?
However it may be a Transmission Electronic control malfunction.
The Tacoma's are known for their faulty/malfunctioning instrument clusters describing your problem... I believe there are lots of threads here on this.

Still haven't found a fix, but i'm fairly certain it's something in the transmission. We tried moving it today, and even revving it to 2k will not move the truck, it just stalls out. Gonna replace the filter and fluid and see if i can get to the solenoids to test them (i believe if i can get them out, a simple application of 12v should actuate them... someone might want to chime in on that though).

Sounds like the torque converter is shot, but lets leave that for last there's a thread here about testing the solenoids for the transmission once I get home I'll link them unless someone beats me to it.

I would be willing to bet that it is the solenoids... I would guess if the TC is shot, it would be an all the time issue and not intermittent issue like it has been..

Hopefully it is, thats what was wrong with my old mans 4runner replaced shift solenoid E and no more stalling issue and heres the link.

Just wanting to post an update, finally got some time today to tear into the truck.. Pan and filter both look clean for 160K.. Maybe 2 or 3 slivers of metal on the magnets. Pulled all three solenoids out and applied 12v to each and low and behold the solenoid that is off by itself does not click, and i can hear something rattling in it when shaken... I'm not sure if that is the 1-2 solenoid, or the lockup solenoid. If someone could post a FSM link or page that identifies the solenoids, i'd be extremely grateful, as my version does not list a section for the solenoids for some reason. Either way, i believe this to be the issue, and tomorrow i will be going to toyota of dallas (with a bottle of lube i might add), to get the correct solenoid, fluid, and filter. If its under 400 all together, i may just get all three solenoids... But i am doubtful. Fingers crossed that it fixes the truck!

Got it all put back together, waiting on the FIPG to cure overnight.
If anyone is curious, the front most solenoid (the one that was broke), is the no.1 solenoid, and is 305 dollars after tax at my local Yota dealer. The other two were 185 each. That, along with 35 dollars for ATF and 27 for filter brings me to 367 for this repair... My brother damn near has a new truck at this point with all the work/money i've put into this so far. ah well. Xeo, i hope you are right my man!

Welp, theres another no go.... It still wont move, and keeps dying when in drive... And on TOP of that, it started to overheat. The upper radiator hose is warm and the lower is dead cold. I have already replaced the thermo twice already, so i've got to have a blockage in the radiator.
****EDIT***** I feel like the biggest ritard right now, kept looking around the engine bay for a loose vacuum hose, found the ground close to the DLC connector on the intake was super loose. Goes into D-R-1-2 just fine now. I think the solenoid was part of the problem (it wasn't clicking, so it had to have been bad), but the ground also played a part. Thank for all ya'lls help, hopefully i wont need to repost again..
