How do you like the hawk pads compared to OEM? I feel the OEM pads don't wear but just create heat and sqeaks

 

OEM pads are fine INHM, but I will never buy discs from them. They warp like play-doh, its so bad now that there is a slight vibration from them at highway speed.

The main difference between expensive rotors and cheap ones are how long they are allowed to cool in the casting. Expensive rotors are allowed to cool gradually & evenly in the casting to help relieve internal stresses in the metal. This important for warp free operation long term. Sitting in the mold for hours and the extra time is why they cost more.

Cheap rotors are the same exact metal etc... But they are removed from the casting sooner and cooled faster and often times unevenly. From the factory, they will be perfectly fine, but after a few high temperature runs they may warp excessively if not "seasoned" properly and longer.

I buy cheap rotors from autozone and I just season them very very gradually over a few weeks. Expensive torors should be seasoned too but you can do it quicker without as much risk of warping them.

Steel rotors are all basically the same, its the cooling time that makes the difference, they all brake the same. Spend your money on the best pads, buy cheap rotors & season them properly, you wont have warping issues as long as you dont do 100-0-100 sprints on a regular basis and then park the car.

The biggest cause of warped rotors is actually hard breaking immiediately followed by parking the car or keeping brakes engaged at a stop. The pads will cool the rotor unevenly thus causing warpage. Also hot brakes being cooled by a water puddle can cause warpage.

I have had my brembo blanks for 80K and on my second set of Hawk HPS pads and love the set up.

I got my at the tirerack....if you find them cheaper ask tirerack to match the price.

 

I got mine from the tire rack. I do think there is a difference between the good rotors and the cheapies. I was running the "Federated" brand rotors on my 4runner when i 1st got it. Lasted about 10k before they were warped worse than the originals. I bought a set of the Brembo blanks from TR, and a set of OEM pads from the dealer. They have been on there for almost 40k, if not longer, and have not had a problem. They seem to squeak for the 1st time backing up in the AM, but no pulsation or odd noises.

If I have to do it again, i'd probably buy Brembos and a nice quality aftermarket pad to go with them.

i actually got mine from amazon (go figure). 44.45 each which is a buck cheaper than what i bought it at last week, no tax for me, and free shipping. can't beat that....
